Great museum focussing on highwaymen style of art unique to Florida of the 1930's-40's- 50's when these mostly black painters sold views of what is now called "old Florida" to visitors driving into the state along its highways. Backus was a mentor to many.
looking for things to do while staying in Vero a Beach my wife found this art museum. Very interesting story of Mr. Backus who was a self taught artist who made it. The museum also had works of the Highwaymen. Look it up if you re not familiar with them. They have a very interesting story. Allow 1 1/2 to 2 hours to really see the museum. Well worth your time
We are not people who usually go to art museums, but we thought this was a wonderful display of A.E. Backus artwork. The cost of admission for seniors is 3.00 and you can see some beautiful landscape paintings as well as some Highwaymen artwork. Check it out for yourself!
This place is a must see when on the Treasure Coast. I especially appreciated Backus' influence on the Florida Highwaymen art work and the display of some of their works in the gallery.
This is a very nice little museum celebrating the life and art of A.E. Backus. Famous for his beautiful Florida arts capes, they have dozens of his original paintings. My wife especialy enjoyed seeing the painting that he was working on just before he died, as well as his paint and brushes. They also have a small, but very nice store and a nice collection of both original and reproduction art pieces of his for sale.In addition, there is always a temporary show. We were blessed to see an exhibit of the famous black "Highway Artists" of Florida and a juried art exhibit. Well done. Well worth a visit.
Very friendly atmosphere. Good display of paintings. Art work changes often much to my delight. They sponsor a great "All you should Eat" Brunch which is always a big success. They also have an awesome auction of once used items which always goes over very well.
Visit, you won't be disappointed. Great beach hotel. Inlet Beach Bar and Grill across the street a must. Great music and outdoor big screen for football games.
If you're a collector or connoisseur of Florida art, make sure you visit this wonderful little museum. It is outstanding.
This is such a quaint art museum. I loved this place and you must love Highway Men Art. I highly recommend....$2.00 too which is an awesome price for museums.
This was a nice little spot to see some beautiful Florida artscapes. My daughter especialy enjoyed seeing the painting that he was working on before he died. Being an artist, she appreciated being able to see it before it was done. They also had some nice items for sale as well from originals to prints.
The colors combined with the nature views will transport you to another dimension, it is a great experience and the additional collection for the home is great!
The building has had its parking lot renovated just this last month and is that much better to receive visitors. Excellent art shows are held there ad I for one have bought wonderful art pieces there. IT is also part of historic ft Pierce.
Beanie Backus was an artist who lived in Ft. Pierce who had an exceptional ability to capture the essence of old Florida and the quality of light on the water and the pine scrub of the inland areas. He was also philanthropic with his talent and taught a generation of African American painters who came to be known as the Highwaymen. I recommend that you visit his museum when you are in the area.
I saw the web site and thought I should look it up . It was a wonderful Visual of Florida as we should all see it ! Through the eyes of an Artist who truly loved this area and saw the subtle effects of light and air and a Master of conveying it with brush and knife . A MUST ADD ! to your art library . I'm glad I did !
This art gallery is located in the historic district of Ft. Pierce. Off season and on the weekdays may be easier to find parking. There is parking right across the street currently. This museum is also closed on Monday/Tuesdays. The main artist displayed in this museum, of course, A.E. Backus. You can google him to see if it is an artist you are interested in. He is local to Ft.Pierce and many of his painting reflect the area and his growing up here. They also have a gift shop and much of it is Mr. Backus's art (cards, etc...). They also display other artists art. And depending on what time of year may depend on what other art is there. It is not a large museum, so the time there will not be very long. There is a small fee. I think if you are in the area and like art galleries, you should not miss this. I even think that if you are not a huge fan of art galleries, but are interested in local history, you may want to come by and learn a little about A.E. Backus and his connection to Ft. Pierce.
