This place is loaded with information on the area from the 1700's to more current times. Very informative and well run by a great volunteer staff. Be sure to take the tour of the old house on the property.
On a cold Florida day we ventured to this hidden little gem and were so glad to find a very well run historical museum. This place has some marvelous volunteers who make sure that your visit is a good experience. The museum building looks small...but looks are deceiving. It was well worth the inexpensive price of admission. If you are in the area, do not miss it.
Nice spot on the water. Nice waiters. Friendly, helpful parking attendant! Short wait on holiday weekend.
This little hidden gem really surprised us..very lengthy history of fort pierce and learned some awesome facts..only bad part was no place to sit down and rest legs..spent 3 hrs before we knew it and still did not get to see everything...worth a second visit!
The historical museum, located on the South Beach causeway, features dioramas and many historical pictures from the Ais indian communities to the Spanish and American settlers. There is a section dedicated to the many treasure ships wrecked off the beaches. Who knows, maybe if you have a metal detector you'll get lucky! I recommend that you tour the Gardner House that was relocated to the site. We had one of the Gardner's who grew up in the house give the tour. It is an excellent example of a Florida house built to withstand the hot, humid climate without the benefit of air conditioning. St. Lucie County has done an exceptional job of transforming the area into a great park, fishing and swimming location for locals and tourists alike. Enjoy an afternoon touring old Florida.
This museum does a fantastic job of providing information on the history and development of the Ft. Pierce area. The museum has interceptors/guides who are volunteers. Our guide's name was Jon and he was very informative and answered all our questions including those of best restaurants in Ft. Pierce. The museum covers the history from the first peoples of Florida and I believe they provided more information than most local museums. This is a great museum for a visitor to the area, as you get a crash course on the history and events leading up to current times. The admission into the Smithsonian Aquarium, gives you admission to the museum as well. The washrooms are clean and spacious and there is a quaint gift shop at the entrance. I bought a book written by Zora Neale Hurston, an African American anthropologist/teacher/writer who was years ahead of her time. Her grave site is in Ft. Pierce at 17th St and Ave. S. This museum is small with attention to attention to the visitor. I would definitely recommend this site.
The history museum and Gardner house are well worth the visit. The artifacts, photos and displays all give you a great look into our local history. The local family history exhibit has some really interesting photos and anecdotes from the families that are still part of our county today.
We really enjoyed this museum. The size is deceiving! There are numerous displays to look over during your self guided tour. We spent at least an hour wandering around the displays then spent a pleasant half hour touring the restored home on the property. Our tour guide Daniel once lived in the home as a child and has many interesting stories to tell. I think we talked about every item in the home. Both buildings have A/C, something Daniel would tell you he missed as a child!
If you want to learn about old St. Lucie County and Fort Pierce make sure you visit the Museum. There are many exhibits about the Treasure Coast and I know you will enjoy it. Check the opening time and days open to be sure you have a good time there.
For just a couple more dollars you can add the St Lucie County Regional History Center to St. Lucie County Aquarium admission. It a self guide tour through the museum but a guided tour through the home and other structures located outside the main building.
Very impressed with such a small place with so much information about Ft. Pierce history. Well worth experience.. I even got dressed up!!! Lol
This museum was way better than I expected. The audio guides were as good as any other museum I have visited. Excellent variety of subjects from ancient to modern history of the area.A special treat was that the docent that gave us a tour of the old Florida "cracker" house was raised in and owned that house!.I give this place a grade A for a local museum. It's on the waterfront too.
This museum and Smithsonian museum are just a 3 minute walk from each other. The combo price is only $5 for the 2 museums. The museum gives you a handheld wand that you listen to as you punch in the number corresponding to the exhibit. Very interesting history of the area. I didnot know that Jensen Beach was once the world pineapple capital. Many other interesting tidbits throughout the museum.
I was not expecting much from an area that didn't show much , But was I surprised to see the museum and its set up so professional ! The Historic Home with one of the past resident showing you around the rooms he once played in . The Staff were so helpful and all part of the flavor of the area . It all gave me a real feeling of the past that made this place what it is today .
To find this museum and you are coming over the bridge from Ft. Pierce to South Hutchinson Island. take a left where you see the signs for the aquarium and museum. As you pull into this lot you will see a road to the left that runs parallel to the bridge. Follow that and you will see the museum. There is a small fee to get in the museum. They will give you one of those devices that you can listen to as you go through the museum. You hit the number and it will tell you about the display you are standing in front of. The history runs from the early Indians, all the way to the mid-1900's. The museum doesn't look very big, but it seem to keep going and going. They have quite a collection. They do have some unnamed photos on the walls They ask that if you know who are in the photos, to let the volunteers know. So if you are from the area, you may want to make a trip to see if you have any old ancestors hanging on the walls of the museum. There is a lot of writing on the walls to go through as well, so if you need glasses to see, bring them. Once done with the museum, a volunteer took me through the old house and garage next door. He was very knowledgeable about the family who owned the home, as well as the period items in the house. Anyone interested in history (especially Ft. Pierce history) should visit. It is not just about the 'who came here and conquered each other', but it is fun to see items they used and how much harder life had to be back many years ago. They also have a really terrific fire truck in the back with quite a history.
