Stop by the visitor center for a map, because all the murals are spread out in the downtown area of Lake Placid. It is a fun sort of scavenger hunt that gives you the option to spend a couple hours to a whole afternoon if you want. The visitor's booth has a guide with hidden objects in some murals to look for, worth the money to buy the guide.
The Murals of Lake Placid depict the history of flowers & the people of this area who shaped the future of the area. There is no admission, but go to the Chamber of Commerce Visitors Center to watch a video & get a booklet for 3 dollars & map that lays out all the murals & where they are & what they represent. These murals are truly well done & have little items hidden in them for you to find. There are interesting trash cans to match some of the murals as well. You can walk around town or drive the streets & get out to see them up close. There are many places to sit on benches around town. There is a clown school there also. Interesting for all ages. Enjoy!
By all means go to the Welcome Center first and get the mural booklet and look at the renderings there. Works of art -- very professional quality. Engaging images of local history. Great to see them in life size all over town.
Your tour of the murals should begin at the Chamber of Commerce where there is an introductory video shown. Buying the $3 booklet about the murals is well worth the price with all the history & information it includes.
Make sure you see all the murals in this town. I was lucky to have seen one being painted. They show the history and scenery of the area. Very beautiful by talented artists.
First, let me explain that there are huge murals painted on the sides of many of the buildings in this lively town. Many of them depict history of the town, such as the one with Mr. Dewey, of the Dewey decimal system who renamed the town Lake Placid and made many contributions to the town.I've seen some of the murals in past visits, but this was the first time I went into the Chamber of Commerce to see the presentation. It was certainly worthwhile! For only $3 you can buy a booklet with information about all of the murals. Not only are there lovely murals on many buildings, but many of the trash cans around are painted with all sorts of designs from flowers and butterflies to clowns to cars and more. You can walk through the town or drive through most of it and see nearly all of the murals that way. There are benches to rest and enjoy the scenery. A lovely way to spend an afternoon.
If you want to pick up some Lake Placid history this is the place to go. Make sure you go to a local shop and get a book (they were $3 where we got them). Almost every mural has hidden things in it for you to find.
The murals of Lake Placid are a fun adventure for everyone in the family. The murals are great to see throughout the town and many artists have included hidden items which keeps everyone engaged. Don't expect to see them all if you are with children!
You really need to get the guide before you tour the murals. It tells you where they are, what to look for, & other interesting objects along the way.You could probably walk around to see them, but they are spread out & it is easier to drive your car, bike or whatever your vehicle of choice is. There is room to pull in to view the murals.
A group of ladies visited here for a Holiday Home Tour... The friend who lived here took us on a tour of the murals.. We did not get a chance to get out and look closely, but some of them even had sounds to go with them! They were amazingly realistic and exquisitely done. I would like to go back and have a full tour of them all. Lake Placid is small town, Florida...definitely a place you should visit!
This is a nice little town and a good meeting place for friends who live on the east and west coasts of Florida and would like to meet up half way between the two. The town has colorful murals painted on many walls depicting town life. There is a visitors center where you can view a short video of the murials and you can also purchase a murial guide for a few dollars.
From 8th grade to 11th grade I lived in Lake Placid. These murals are something to be proud of. I came back last year for a visit and show my family. Town doesn't seem as "bright" as I remember and the locals are not as friendly to "tourists" as they are to locals. It's been years so I don't expect to be noticed as a local.
Be sure to take in the Murals of Lake Placid on buildings around town. They show so much of the history of the area plus beautiful artwork. The murals have been highlighted in Southern Living Magazine. Lake Placid is great town to visit for a day trip, attending a weekend festival, or spending the weekend on one of the beautiful lakes. Be sure to pick up a map of mural locations!
It's definitely very enjoyable to walk or drive around town to view the murals. I like how they depict history or the local environment. We saw some recently while at the Caladium Festival.
My family (me, dad, kids 9 and 12,and grandma) spent about 3 hours touring the murals on a Sunday afternoon. We stopped by the visitor's center the day before to purchase a mural guidebook ($2 or $3) and watch the short video about the murals. The fun part for dad was taking pictures of the murals with his new camera. Grandma, the kids, and I enjoyed finding the hidden pictures in each mural. It's a nice way to spend a few hours. Take water along if you plan on visiting all the murals. We walked back to our starting point (Walgreens) to grab some water and drove the car past the murals we missed.
