Just before you get to the bridge to the beach, you will find McGough Nature Park on the right. It's a small park that has fabulous trails that give a taste of old Florida. Follow the trails out to the intercoastal waterway. From the pier you will easily view all kinds of marine life, including sting rays, other fish, and birds. This is an owl rescue site; behind the main building there are cages with owls and other birds that can no longer survive in the wild. There is a nice education center inside the building, rather small, but just the right size for children who like to move from one task to the other quickly. It's a great place for an afternoon walk!
We tracked this City of Largo park down and parked and walked around for free. No dogs or bikes allowed, so Fido had to stay home. A small building houses a few displays that some kids were enthusiastic over. Just out back was a porch with caged birds that were recovering from some injuries. There was also a park ranger walking around with a Red Tailed Hawk on her glove. She fed it a hamster while we watched. There were also owls and some other hawks in the large cages. We walked along the paths and boardwalk out back and at one point we were over the waters of the Indian River along the mangroves that line the shore. It was a pleasant walk and very shady. There were signs along to point out different things we were passing
