Beautifully restored buildings and park. Small art gallery showing Dali lithographs. Lovely chapel, and a telephone museum! Spend some time here. The dedicated staff are as delightful as the grounds.
We enjoyed walking around the grounds. We had a dog with us and could naturally not go inside. None of the various buildings were open on Sunday but the architecture was interesting.
The Maitland Art center is a beautiful destination to soothe a restless soul. The grounds are the remains of a historical artist's colony. Etched concrete adorns the walls, walkways and outdoor garden areas, making the center as much a work of art as the carefully chosen works that hang inside. Culture and history exude... not to be missed.
Best little museum within 250 miles! Whenever we have visitors we take them there to experience the unique architecture--Aztec/Mayan Gardens which are free The museum itself is very small and has exhibits I honestly have to rate as fair but perhaps worth the small admission price. But the experience of going there is a 10 out of 10 for the gardens. They have some nightly events in the winter which are fun. And if you are going to get married, you should look into this place.
The Maitland Art Center offers a real look at the early days of Maitland as well as a quiet place to reflect. There is a museum of the telephone company history in Winter Park and Maitland. Many weddings are held there. On some evenings you can attend art shows with wine and cheese and lots of artists milling about. You might run across a poetry reading or slide show in one of the artists studios or in the area across the street. A great place to let kids run around outside, although they need supervision inside.
If you want to get away from it all and immerse yourself in the true creative spirit of art then this is the place. The art center has a long history of encouraging creative work on its premises and there are artists who actually work here in the individual cottages. The beautiful grounds are accented by the multi talented creations of its founder Andre Smith.
I was there because photos were being taken for a wedding at the Art Center. It was this past weekend and rainy. I dropped in to get out of the rain. Loved the art, legacy and work of Andre Smith. It was amazing to learn about his life and his love affair with his work. It takes the Maitland Art Center on a journey on how it got started. Love the place and the venue. Staff was great and very helpful. Thanks for all the memories!
I could imagine a party outside in the concrete area, wedding photos on the lawn and much more here. It was very quaint and quiet inside and had very nice displays. It doesn't take long to get thru so you probably wouldn't make a day of it but it would definitely be worth making it a part of a wonderful, lazy day.
This was a nice place to walk around for a couple of hours.
My girlfriend and I went to this series of museums this afternoon. It turned out to be a pleasant outing. The art center was small, but nice. The really value of the trip came from visiting the other museums that are associated with the art center. The telephone museum was personally my favorite. A lot of time was put into making that small area a hands-on and demonstrative learning experience. Definitely worth the time, if you are looking for a relaxing way to spend the afternoon. Also, Lake Lily is close by and warrants a visit. There you will find the Farmer's Market, on Sundays, and the Capenter's Museum. I recommend taking a Sunday afternoon to visit it all. And with a three dollar price tag for each, you can't go wrong.
I love the atmosphere of this place. And it was the perfect outdoor space for a small wedding. Very unique.
I'll admit I may be showing a little bit of partiality here, but I think Maitland Art and History Center is one of the best things going in Central Florida and Maitland. I've taken classes there for several years and haven't been disappointed in any of them. The instructors are outstanding and it's so cool to take classes in the facility that Andre Smith established for artists. The art gallery is small but enjoyable. The Maitland History Museum and the Telephone Museum, both next door, offer an interesting view into local history (the history museum) and telecommunication (the telephone museum). After visiting the telephone museum you'll be asking yourself, "wow, how did we get along without cellphones?"!
While our respective spouses worked at an Orlando convention, a friend and I drove to Maitland Art Center early in the morning. The actual musuem was not open but the office was open and their curator gave us a verbal overview of the artist retreat. We then wandered about the grounds. Much of the outside art was either sculptured or carved out of cement with a definite Mayan and Aztec influence. There are several artists workshops but none were open when we visited.
