There are many large murals throughout the City. They are all over. It would be easy to miss some if you don't know where to look. They are all very well done. My favorite is "the Battle of Horse landing" A confederate artillery company captures a Union gunboat. There is a booklet that describes and locates all the murals, but I don't know where you'll find it. Check restaurants and maybe the Tax Collectors office.
Was a bright spot. Many are museum quality, especially the one down on Reid street near downtown. I could not help admiring it every time I drove by.
Really nice seeing all those murals on the sides of the buildings. Some really nice pictures. They are all around town.
My daughters enjoyed seeking out the murals and learning a bit about the local history. They may be viewed by car, but would make a nice walk if you have time.
It's worth the trip to go see. I have never seen anything like this in my travels. I like seeing these paintings on the walls of the buildings as I traveled around, I wish other towns would think of doing this, sort of drive by town history. Next time if there is time I would like to walk up and down the streets to be able to really take it all in. There are very talented artists in the area.
It's hard to tell what I like most about the murals. Not only do they point out interesting times in our city's history, the art work is so well done. We have some very talented artist here. Take a little time to enjoy these. I especially like the one of Billy Graham. Not many know about his history with Palatka.
I have seen all the murals many times but never get tired of them. Yesterday I did discover a new one but cannot remember which street. I believe it was 7th, just around the corner from Angela's Formal Shop. If nothing else, you will get to see more of the murals while searching for this one. If you go to the Palatka Tourist Office they have a brochure with pictures of most all the murals. Make sure you take your camera.
Lots of well done murals. They would be better with some brief explanation(i.e, Billy Graham got this start here).
We liked walking around town and spotting the great murals of scenes of old Palatka. One must have a map to find all the murals.
An easy afternoon trip from surrounding areas will bring you to a community rich in history. The murals are easy to find. Several artists are responsible for depicting Palatka's past. While there, you can also visit two historic districts featuring large Victorian era homes, some along the riverfront. There are good restaurants to stave off starvation as well! A good outing to be had by most.
It's not really an "attraction" but part of the City of Palatka's buildings are painted with murals and pictures. Take a leisurely walk or drive around the area and see for yourself! Just before "the bridge over the St. Johns River into East Palatka" the building on the South side of SR 17 have been painted ... for your pleasure.
Take your time to visit these murals, they are so beautiful. Bring your camera to do a few photos, so you can take home to show friends. You will also be getting some great exercise from the walking.
A nice peaceful town that can easily be explored on foot. The lady at the visitor center was really helpful and friendly - the map she gave me with the murals listed was perfect! Some of the murals are just fantastic and its a great way to get people to wander around the streets and see what else is around.
I enjoy a nice weekend drive to Palatka not from an interstate. No...I love traveling the backroads. If I stay for a night or two, I make reservations at the Quality Inn (not plush but clean and friendly) on the St. Johns River. The last time I was there, I enjoyed lunch at a grill inside the hotel with a lovely view of the river. The hotel is in thjust over the bridge in the historic district. Driving up and down the streets looking at the "gingerbread" homes is delightful. Of course, you have to check out the murals in the town. I always admire "muraled" towns and reading about the artists who created these masterpieces. It seems like this is a growing trend in America and definitely welcomed. I know friends who travel just to visit state capitols. What if we planned our routes to visit towns with these beautiful murals.
My favorite is the depiction of Billy Graham! Quite of variety of local artist and murals! When passing thru or staying in Palatka add this to your list, you won't be disappointed!!
