It's a really good place to bring children. The water is shallow, so I can let them play without standing over them too much. They bring their buckets to collect starfish, blue crabs, and shells. They will take a break from the water and play on the playground. We have also stayed at the cottages, which are within walking distance from the beach. The owners/managers are super nice and invited us back.
We heard about Keaton Beach on trip advisor, so I knew I wanted to visit with my girls while my husband worked. We had been cooped up in a hotel room, so this was the perfect outlet for my kids. We took some sand toys, and played for hours. They couldn't swim because it was too cold outside, but they enjoyed just playing in the sand and the playground. WATCH OUT FOR SAND SPURS! If you are looking for a beach with waves, a large space, or anything romantic...this is NOT the place for you. If you are looking for something close by that you can let your kids have their fun...it is worth the 30 minute drive. It was great. The Hot Dog Shack across the street had delicious food and great service!
We drove a bit from Steinhatchee, where we stayed. It was the end of scallop season, we wanted to try out our Hobie Cat kayak. The water was warm, about 4-5 feet, and very grassy, which is where the scallops are.We waited a bit to go out, some rain, so we walked around the beach area. It was well maintained when we were there, no one else around. The restaurant looked cute, but, closed. The picnic area and restrooms were fine. Remember, it is on the beach, not always pristine. Yes, there is seaweed!Nice spot for seabird watching. too. Very peaceful. My photos are not great, overcast day.
Responding to some earlier comments to say that seaweed is not dirt, and this is not the beachy part of the coast. It is a small beach but a nice one in its own way. The boardwalk, picnic gazebos, and playground seemed well cared for. The drive (17 miles) in from the main highway was very pretty too. I enjoyed my visit!
It was a cute little place. Short pier to fish off. Small gazebo to sit at. Small play are for kids. White sand beach. Watch out for sand spurs. Very pretty sunset.
While the scenery on the way to Keaton beach is cute, rustic, country the beach is anything but that! The beach was dirty, seaweed and grass everywhere. Water is very shallow and warm. The playground and covered picnic areas where nice enough however parking lot was tiny and dirty too. The little restaurant there had ok food but way over priced and not very clean. All in all I would not recommend Keaton Beach. It is wonderful for fishing but pick someplace else for your family to visit.
If, when you think of 'beach' you picture an expanse of light colored sand with white capped waves tumbling on shore, this will be a MAJOR let down. The "beach" is only a about 150 feet long covered in sea weed and wave action quieter than some puddles. It has nice facilities and would be perfect for young children if they can be sold on walking through the kelp bed, but It resembles a lake side park more than a beach.
If you are expecting Daytona or Panama City Beach, you are going to be disappointed. Keaton Beach is small. There are about 20 parking spaces in the parking lot. The water is shallow. There is a picnic pavilion and some benches. There is a really long board walk that goes along the boat channel. The new playground is really nice. What Keaton Beach is famous for, is fishing. But not from the shore; bring a boat with you. There is a public boat ramp and also a crane lift at the marina for people that don't want to put their trailers in saltwater. A short run out from the channel and you'll be in some of the best flats fishing waters in Florida.
The beach is tiny but nice Gazebo, picnic tables, kids play area & a nice long pier with seating at the end. Nice to watch a sunset.....nicer if the only resturant there is open but you never know when The Hot Dog stand will or wont be open
Keaton Beach is a very small beach, a white sandy beach. It's the only beach in the area. Perfect for small children or picnicking. There is a little beach cafe across the street. They have the best hot dogs I've ever eaten!!
It was an out of the way adventure to sight see there and visit another side of Florida. The pavilions were brightly colored and the playground was not available while we were there.
