We took the guided riverboat tour and found it very educational. A lot of fun to see the unusual wildlife and, of course, the many alligators. The guide was knowledgeable, friendly, and willing to explain whatever we asked about. Convenient to Tallahassee. The lodge has tasty sandwiches and snacks for before or after the 1 hour river journey.
Extremely nice state park. Took the boat ride ($8) and was pleasantly surprised at the wildlife and scenery. The lodge is also worth the look. Amazing architecture and nostalgic. The food at the lodge was very good and a large amount. Plus the cost was more than reasonable. This is the type of location that makes memories.
There were no animals and birds beyond the usual anhingas, ibis, alligators etc. The mastodon bones were cool however. You cannot kayak, and the springs are murky. Why bother?
We had lunch at the Lodge. The meal was quite good. I had the Red Rooster--delicious. My hubby had a Cesar's Salad...no anchovies, to his dismay. Service, though, was slow. We made it just in time to catch the 3PM river tour. The tour guide was knowledgeable and friendly which made the tour more enjoyable. Birds, alligators, and manatees...oh my! Wonderful!! We ran out of time to take a walk on a nature trail.
Great place to take youth to see the springs and to swim in the springs. Have a lot of trail to view nature. Guided boat trips. Manatees available in fall and spring. Great day trip. If in area a great place to visit young or older.
If go, plan on 3+ hours so that you can eat at the Lodge restaurant. Good elegant dining for moderate prices. Lodge is vintage elegant & rents rooms. For quick eating they also have a snack bar with hot dogs, sandwiches, ice cream & lots of ‘old’ fashion candies. The riverboat tour is well worth it too. You’ll learn a lot about the animals & birds. We have gone twice. March 2014 & Feb. 2015 & saw manatees both times. They also have walking trails. We will go again when in this area.
Wakulla Springs State Park is fantastic!!! If you are passing through or new to the area, this is where the locals bring out of town guests. The Lodge is built in the 1920's a travelers paradise, and the food it may be a top 5 dining choice for Wakulla County for sure! Go back in time, and slow down a couple of speeds and enjoy the breathtaking natural beauty of the largest spring in the world!!!
Take the 30 minute drive from Tallahassee and you'll find yourself in a different world at Wakulla Springs State Park. A full grown river emerges from enormous fresh water spring and the water remains a constant temperature throughout the year. This brings Manatees up from the gulf during the winter months so you are very likely to see a half-dozen or more manatees swimming in the beach and diving area of the park from December through February.Pay the extra money and take a boat ride through the natural area of the park. Your knowledgeable captain will point out a dozen species of birds, help you spot the alligators, and even throw in some terrible and corny jokes. He will also point out the exact locations where "the creature from the black lagoon' was filmed in the 1950s and where one of the Tarzan movies was filmed in the 1940s. Even if the water is dark and cloudy from recent rains, this is a wonderful place for a nature outing in the swamps of Florida
We visited after a rain so the river was dark and the glass bottom boats weren't going out but the jungle tour was. So many animals could be seen off shore. In warm weather you can swim . Great place
Wakulla was very nice, the site itself was gorgeous, the water was crystal clear, and we even had a manatee come up to us and literally bump into a group of people. The only con is that the water is freezing, so the only time of the year I see myself enjoying this location is during a hot hot summer day.
Wakulla springs is a fantastic place! On most days the water is crystal clear down to the ground, and is wonderful to swim in during the summer (even if it is a bit chilly!). There are floating docks and a high jump to complete the swimming area. The boat tour they offer is a must do! You get to see alligators, manatees, and lots of birds all the while listening to a knowledgeable park ranger guide. Pack a lunch and spend the day out there!
I grew up in Wakulla County and have been to Wakulla Springs hundreds of times even back when Edward Ball owned it. Every time I've gone back "home" I've visited and this past summer I was actually disappointed for the first time. It seems as all of the alligators and wildlife have moved further down river where the boat tours do not go. When I was a child and younger adult even 5 or 6 years ago it was much more busy with wildlife. Not sure why this is happening but as a lifelong visitor I can see where this park will no longer be worth visiting if this continues.
Entrance park fee needs to be reduced. Glass bottom boat never in commission. However, the stately restaurant is worth eating at while there. It's a nixe visit, but not much more to offer.
The boat tour around the springs and swanp area was very informative. We were able to see and photograph several alligators, turtles, many different birds, snakes, unusual trees and plant life. The guide was very patient with the group and provided many photo ops to all. For $8 pp it was a great way to see an otherwise unavailable area.Be sure to pop in the lodge and see the beautiful architecture before you leave.
This was our second trip to Wakulla Springs, because the first, 3 or 4 years ago, left us with such good memories. We got there early, and scouted the immediate area as we waited for the first boat of the day. The sun was in our favor, and we shot lots of photos of anhingas, gators, turtles, and the incredible swampiness of the place, with its cypresses and palms and other sorts of flora and fauna uncommon in the Seattle area. The setting is beyond beautiful, and our guide, Jackie, was informative, and unlike the Disney sort of guides who recite points of interest by rote. This is a place we will return to, every time we visit relatives in Tallahassee.
