Went here for a picnic lunch. Nice pavilions to sit under. Walked the beach after our lunch. Walked through the camping area and that looked nice. Took the walk to see the old bridge - didn't see much. Wouldn't bother doing that again.
Don't expect large beaches and no tourists. Bahia Honda is a very popular state park and better if you get there early. The main beach area (turn right after you enter the park) looking towards the bridge and main highway in the distance, has great views and shady places to sit and barbeque. Watch out for the ants on the beach though. From the same parking area you can walk up and on to a small part of the bridge with great views and the other side of the peninsular with the same lovely sandy beaches (both with seaweed) and beautiful turquoise sea. When we went it was windy and the sea was really rough and spectacular. There were also a lot of Portuguese Man of War jellyfish washed up.We also drove down to the other end of Bahia Honda (turn left as you enter the park) which was very pretty with sea grass and very thin sandy beaches all along, and plenty of parking at the end.
Beautiful beach, best in the keys. Both gulf and Atlantic. Wear beach shoes, still a bit rocky, but less so than the other beaches in the Keys. Worth spending the day for sun lovers...
Beautiful area! We took pictures that could easily pass for Caribbean vacation photos! Nice beach area was a bit crowded, although it was late afternoon so we did not try to get sun, just walked around and up to the viewing area by the old railroad bridge. Looks like a super camping spot as well. If we had stayed in the keys longer, we could have come back to this spot, but we only did a quick tour. Looks like a great place to spend a day!
so glad we packed our swimsuits because we decided to stop here for a swim at a beach with the kids. This was by far the best beach stop we could have made. Clean location right off of the highway. We visited the Gulf side which was much better for the kids; calmer waters than the Atlantic side. We did drive and peek at the Atlantic side and it had a long beach that was nice, the waves were just really big. We arrived about 4:30 but had plenty of swim time before sunset which was beautiful. Overall an excellent stop with the kids or for adults looking for a beach to relax on for a moderate entry fee.
Loved the ocean side beach, very long great walking beach. When the tide is out, it is a wonderful place to witness nature! So many little tiny things happening in the tidal pools that are created by the tide going out. Not to be missed!Did not love all the man-of-war jellies that were there!
We had a lovely day scouting out which beaches we would take our Grandchildren to see. Many children were playing on the beach, as it's nice and sandy. There is a box at the visitor center to leave behind, or borrow toys, but not much in the box. There is a nice concessions stand, but no gluten free items other than an all beef patty, and Nachos supreme. They had Edy's ice cream cones, as well as other ice cream treats, and Key Lime pie. There is snorkel equipment to rent, but the water was too cold for us to get in the water. People were fishing there, and if you go to the left and start out at the nature trail, it's a pretty walk, but may be too much for little children on a hot day. They have 2 changing rooms on the left, and 1 on the right, with 2-3 stalls in each. ( Not enough, long lines). You can bring your own cooler. Admission is 9.00 for two people. 11 for car of six. It's the nicest natural beach we've visited in the keys, but not very large.
If you don't go here , you haven't been to the keys. The have a play that teaches about the creation of the key west area. Its fun and educational
Bahia Honda State Park was our favorite stop on our day trip through the Florida Keys. The walk along the beach was beautiful. We found a picnic table to enjoy our lunch with a gorgeous view of the water. Be sure to go clear to the west end of the park for a view from above. You'll also see plenty of butterflies in the butterfly park. We didn't swim, but many people were in the water. This was a quiet beach with much beauty to behold.
If you like long walks on anice sandy beach, with warm water slashing on your feet and interesting things (like jelly fish and sponges) to check out washed up on the beach then spen a few hours taking in this park.
