We walked around the old city and there are a ton of shops here and restaurants. We just walked around and poked into some of the shops and was surprised by the quality and quanity of the gifts. You could spend a few dollars or much more, and we did buy some things that were unique, not the same old same old. A nice way to top of the morning after visiting the fort.
Have gone down this 'old antique road in heart of downtown St. Augustine on many occasions since the early 1970's, enjoying each one, seeing something new almost every time, going through the antique stores and it is not hard to imagine this has been here for hundreds of years. Describe? Unique. Historical. Antique Shopping. Art stores. Take a leisurely stroll down one one of the oldest 'shopping strips' in the country- a walk down a piece of history- take at least one hour ... and I will bet you will stop by again during another visit to St. Augustine.
Touring the Old City by these trains is a wonderful way to begin your sightseeing of this historic city. Our 90 minute trip with a most enjoyable driver/narrator who gave us the verbal description of the historic buildings and areas we were seeing.
The Old City is the best part of St Augustine. Lots of History, nice Museums and places to visit.Great walking city.Saint George St is a pedestrian Street.
The Old City of St. Augustine is like going back in time. We reveled in the old architecture and the history that goes with it. Some of the shops were unique and fun to see. We thoroughly enjoyed this entire experience.
When we went it was real cold for Florida standard but that did not stop us. The place is beautiful, bars, shops and resturants. Will go back real soon.
The old city is beautiful and a great place to roam and shop. Safe for everyone. All the staff at various shops were very healpful and nice.
Somewhere in the midst of the tacky souvenir shops, and never ending restaurantts are some beautiful forts, homes, etc. But it's very hard to appreciate them because of all the crap surrounding them. We were in St Augustine immediately after completing walking tours in Charleston and Savannah which only highlighted the commercialization of St Augustine. Both of those cities have incorporated the shops and restaurants in a way that is classy and mostly unobtrusive. St Augustine feels like Wisconsin Dells Main Street or Keystone SD. If you like that kind of attraction, then this is the place for you. Otherwise, go north a bit and visit Savannah and Charleston.
Ambling through the quaint streets of the Old City feels much like experiencing the best of New Orleans or Charleston. The architecture, small museums, homes, and shops provide a charming ambiance. The entire area is peppered with great places to eat. Clean public restrooms are plentiful. Parking is $6 for the 4 hours you will need to scratch the surface and have a meal. Or use the trolley. Eager to return.
take a walk do some shopping get some great eats listen to some really good music all the while looking at the architecture
Give yourself at least six hours to walk and enjoy all of the shops to see and all of the places to go. Good food and easy walking. Much, much to see. Some of the oldest places in the country are here to see and enjoy Will be back again.
Unlike the completely fake Colonial Quarter (feel free to check out my review of that), this part of St Augustine actually contains buildings that date to the Colonial period. Unfortunately, due to a fire that destroyed most of original St Augustine, none of the buildings date earlier than 1702, but they are the same authentic buildings from that time period. And it is absolutely free to wander through here. Some of the buildings are open as museums and they have entrance fees if you want to see the inside, but simply walking the streets and reading the numerous historical markers is absolutely free. I felt like I was walking around an old European City. Prior to our trip to St. Augustine, I couldn't figure out what this area was and (mistakenly) thought the Colonial Qtr would be the highlight of our trip. I couldn't even figure out what the Old City was. This is probably because it is not just a tourist trap - unlike much of the rest of St Augustine. It is really just the streets of the old city and you should just go and wander around them, stopping in at any museums along the way that look interesting.
we had our bikes and enjoyed riding around the area slowly on the quiet streets. We purposely sought out the less travelled streets and enjoyed seeing the beautiful restored homes. Very much like the French Quarter in New Orleans. Loved the walking /shopping area also.
Visited the old town about 25 years ago and loved the old buildings, artists painting in the streets and the general ambiance. This time found it overrun with stores and so-called museums. Very disappointed.
The old city is a great place to visit. They have wonderful little shops and the most fabulous restaurants.
