Small church but full of history and beauty.. well worth a visit.. Shows yet another aspect of beautiful St. Augustine....
Although the Basilica Cathedral was closed to the public, for renovations, the gift shop was still open. We were able to peek into a window to see some of the art work on the ceiling. The baptismal font was open for public view and was absolutely stunning. A must see for anyone of the Catholic faith. A lot of history.
Still unable to see the inside.....I'm excited to see what it will look like. I wanted to show my daughter what churches used to really look like.
How disappointing! I wanted so much to see the Cathedral, and it was closed for renovation. Of course, the gift shop was open, so I had to settle for some postcards. Guess that means I have to come back to St. Augustine.
I think this will be a wonderful attraction when it reopens. Come back when the renovation is finished. Even the street view is marred by construction equipment. Buy a post card and come back sometime next summer.
we are catholic so we went to the mass, and we really love it. so peaceful so beauty, we just want to go to the church again we just love it
This is the most beautiful church. I took a lot of pictures and though it was being worked on we were there, it didn't take anything from the visit. We lit several candles in memory of loved ones and a small donation.
Great piece of history and a very beautifull church right iin the heart of town only steps away from many great places to eat and shop
Well worth taking the time to visit! Just walk around looking at the architecture and history! Can't wait to go back to this site and spend some more time here!
Totally worth a visit while in St Augustine. The church has been beautifully renovated. The murals are bright and the colors vibrant. The sacred space is quiet and tourists were respectful.
The building has changed, but this is worth a visit for the history. The basilica is beautiful, with red timbered ceiling and a lovely gold mosais behind the main altar. We had to try a few times before we got there when they were open to visitors (Saturday morning) and we would highly recommend it.
When we first visited, the Basilica was closed, which surprised us since the sign said "Visitors Welcome." The next day, we found ourselves nearby again and the doors were open. A women's choral group was about to perform, so we went in, looked around, said a prayer and listened to a few minutes of rehearsal. A lovely church!
Attended Mass on Saturday 1/3. Father Morgan presided. He was welcoming and gave a great homily, discussing the Epiphany & the Magi.He was also very funny! The church has been there since late 1500's although rebuilt d/t war and fires. Docents frequently provide details regarding the church, when it was built and about St Agustin (A-gus-tin) not pronounced Augustine like the town. Make a point to visit, even if you are not Catholic or going to Mass.
Built by the Spanish when Florida belonged to Spain. This Church is built with a old Europe flavor. Worthy of visiting and enjoying the peace, the architecture and a prayer.
