I LOVE the Castillio and cannot imagine a trip to St Augustine without going back for "one more time" visiting the fort and taking it in again and again. You have options going to see the Fort - take the self-guided tour with plenty of opportunities to go on your own and linger or take utilize the Ranger tour. From the writing on the coquina walls or the cannon that still stand upon the upper court or stoop down to go into the gunpowder storage and feel how isolated it is AND how dangerous it gives you a look into the past in a way that you cannot experience through looking at pictures or reading in books. You see how the soldiers lived, slept, where they ate, prayed and died. From the upper court you also have a great view of the St John's River with numerous sailboats as well as getting to watch the dolphins leaping from the water. It is amazing to watch them and glorious as the sun hits the water glittering on the waves.Bring a sunhat and wear sunscreen if you are coming in the warm weather! Sunburns put a damper on your visit or vacation!ACCESSIBILITY:The parking lot and the fort's lower level, which includes the museum rooms, the theater, the bookstore and the restrooms, are wheelchair accessible. The upper levels require climbing stairs. Most of the Park's pedestrian walkways are paved; however, those within the moat and covered way are sand and crushed shell stoneAdults (Age 16 and above) entrance is $7.00 - valid for 7 consecutive days.Children (age 15 and under) are admitted free of charge but must be accompanied by an adult.Castillio de San Marcos is a Federal Park so there are some SAVINGS ALERT:ANNOUNCING EVERY KID IN A PARKA new initiative to get all 4th graders and their families to experience the places that are home to our country’s natural treasures, rich history, and vibrant culture FREE OF CHARGE! http://www.nationalparks.org/ook/every-kid-in-a-parkMILITARY DISCOUNTS:Active Duty U.S. Military Personnel Offered Free EntranceDisabled Vets(with proper ID) get a pass that allows them and three guests Free Entrance(this also applies to most of the Federal Parks - see link here for more information: http://www.nps.gov/search/?affiliate=nps&query=military+discount)

Castillo de San Marcos is a small castle, in a terrific defensive position, with centuries of history behind it. The National Park Service takes care of it, and the history of the castle is well displayed throughout the rooms. They set off cannons a couple of times a day, using bread instead of wadding. It was comical to see the birds who are obviously used to the routine looking for the bread crumbs that fall onto the wall below. This is a delightful castle, don't miss it !

Stopped by this location just to walk around the exterior and take photos, (we did NOT have time to tour the inside, but would like to go back to do that). Great views of the Cannonball "Hot Shot" Oven, exterior Cannonball Holes in the wall, the nearby Lions Lift Bridge, the St. Augustine Lighthouse, and across the street from the St. Augustine Pirate Shopping & Tourist area. Pay Parking lot on site, but get there early to get a space as the lot fills fast.

Visiting the fort was enjoyable. The rooms in the fort have information in them and you can get so many scenic shots atop this fort. I had to go to the bathroom when we got to the fort and I was worried they wouldn't have a bathroom, but they did and it was nice. To get the most value for what you paid for I would recommend visiting their sister site Fort Mantanza. Sure it's much smaller but they give you a free tour and boat ride to the small fort for free and it's made possible because the money from the castillo is shared with it.

This National Park Fort is sooo awesome. Really. Standing overlooking the water with the many cannons and picturing the moat filled with water, you can taste the history. You do not realize how big it is until you go in. No one should go to St. Augustine and miss Castillo de San Marcos.

This tour - self guided - was a great experience. The history within the walls was well documented with posters and pictures. The view from the top of the Castillo was breathtaking. The Soldiers in authentic uniforms and the lighting of the cannon was well done.

This is one of the best maintained forts in America! (and one of the oldest!) but the very best thing here is to listen to the ranger tell about it's history!. The talk last about one half of a "well spent" hour. You learn that the fort served its purpose well, never having been taken by enemy forces although it was attacked and laid siege to several times. This is a great way for children to learn American history. (even 65 year old "children"!)

Though there is no guided tour, you can wander around at your own speed and they do give you a printed sheet of facts about the fort.If you do find some docents, it is worth your while to hang around and listen to them or ask questions. They are very knowledgeable about the fort, and give great insights. The cannon firing is fun to watch also.Glad we made the effort to come here.

We have visited many forts and castles over the years and were not expecting to be impressed by this one. But it is fantastic! It is run by the amazing National Parks (so if you are a member, you get in free) and the history of the fort is beautifully laid out. Kids will love the many cannons. The fort is constructed of coquina, a limestone mixture of broken shells and coral, and it was interesting to learn about that building material. St. Augustine is a lovely (but busy) town and it is worth parking your car at the Visitors' Center (for $12) then walking around the town. There are lots of historic buildings and you an easily spend a day here.

Visiting El Castillo de San Marcos while traveling I-95, is a must. Not only the castle, but the area surrounding it is hundreds of years old, and you will be walking through history. Once you reach the castle and see it, you will feel pure awe by just the shear size of the thing. To stand there, and imagine the castle in action defending the coast line is just an experience you cant miss out on. (There is a fee if you want to walk inside the castle, you can walk outside of it, and still get a pretty cool view)
