Be aware of what happenend last century...not too long ago either and it could happen to you ... and today.... have time to do this museum. Not too big and worth your time
Be prepared to be emotionally touched. Very educational, especially for people who only read about this horrific event in history books.
Worth the visit. Learned a lot and seeing a box car up close was a bit sad. It did bring it into focus. Never again!
We were not sure what to expect. It is a very nice display from the children's art to the polish boxcar, you can be engaged with the story, history and peoples lives. We were allowed in for free with our teacher Id's but the cost would be worth it. In the end we spent several valuable hours of our time and will never regret it.
We went to visit Florida Holocaust Museum, because Wojtek Sawa, polish American artist had an opening of his very interesting interactive exhibit WALL SPEAKS,about the impact of II WW on polish young children and teenagers whose childhood was robbed by German occupation (9-1-1939 to 5-9-1945).As Poles we know the horrors of German occupation in Poland 1/5 of Poles were killed by Germans..After the exhibit we visited the rest of Holocaust museum. It was set up as a camp.with a Tall box car in the middle of the multilevel room.Very informative exhibits about Jews in Europe before, during and after the IIWW.Photos, horrible images...The painful history which needs to be told to the young people around the world. So it will NEVER happen again...The tickets are $9.00pp museum is ,centrally located.has a gift shop.
This was well worth the visit. Next time we will make sure we can spend more than 2.5 hours.Very informative and well laid out. First class museum.
We had a docent take us through the Florida Holocaust Museum and it was exceptional. If you don't know the history (and I thought I knew a lot), the volunteer's knowledge was endless and her father was a holocaust survivor. Much of the art and artifacts in the museum came from families of survivors or their families. I had no idea how great this museum was in my own city until I took the time to experience it. They even have one of the few original boxcars, used for transporting victims to Auschwitz, etc. I would highly recommend this museum!
A little confusing at the front door since you have to go through a metal detector (no backpacks allowed but they will securely store them for you). The first floor has audio guide wands which was nice and again a little hard to find the numbers on exhibits so I just put in any three digit number and listened.Once you finish first floor, you go through metal detector again (this time the man heard the buzzer but didn't check us out again) and proceed to 2nd/3rd floor for rest of tour (self-guided).The most "real" part was the boxcar on the first floor-so hard to imagine them stuffing 100 people in there and how horrible it was.Appreciate that this museum exists to shine a light on the atrocities of war.
I agree with a few people who visited and felt there were too many story boards. Having said that, we spent two and a half hours walking around, listening to the audio presentations, the videos, and reading about the events of this horrible era and all the atrocities at that time. The few artifacts and the boxcar were indeed the highlights of the tour.
People working there will do the guidance and explain everything if you do not know.very educational for teens.sad pages of history that should not be forgotten.
The subject matter is very important and I understand that, however I wasn't real impressed with the museum. A lot of story boards and such explaining what happened and some testimonials by video of some who went through this horrible time, but I was expecting more artifacts that a museum should have. The boxcar was of course the highlight of the visit, but other than that there wasn't much else. I just figured a museum would have more than just stuff you could read about in a book. I am glad I went, but I don't need to go back.
This was a wonderful place to visit. Very heartbreaking, but yet so educational at the same time. I stood at the caw car and cried. Wonderful exhibition. Can't wait to return. Really bummed about not being able to take pictures though. Will definitely go back!
I've been to several Holocaust Museums throughout the world. This one is rather small but extremely thorough. We could have spent more time listening to all the recorded explanations which are very well done. They are informative and interesting. There are also interesting art exhibits in the upper level of the museum. I was very impressed with the presentation and would certainly recommend visiting this museum.
We enjoyed our visit to the museum. This is a self guided tour and you are provided with an audio wand to hear more information besides what is show on the story boards. There is parking at the building which is free or there is 2 hour street parking in that area. We have been to many museums in our travels. We thought the price of $16.00 for adults was a little high given the size of the museum.Such a horrible time in history and my heart goes out to those and their families that have a first hand experience of it. The boxcar was the highlight of the exhibits for us. I could not stop looking at it and thinking about what those people endured at the hands of one crazy man.We were fortunate enough to be there at a time when a survivor was speaking about growing up in Berlin and fleeing to Shanghai. If you are able to plan your visit when there is a talk we would highly recommend. It is one thing to read about the holocaust but to hear someone talk that lived it gives goosebumps.Overall would recommend if you are in the St Petersburg area.
We did not know what to expect here as we have previously been to the Anne Frank museum in Amsterdam and that takes some beating. However, we were not disappointed as it extremely well done and very professional. The displays are extremely good being well presented and accurate. There is an audio wand provided for more detailed information if you wish to use it.It is one of those sort of places where you can be as quick or as long as you want depending on what you want to get out of it. As it happened we spent several hours there and were also lucky enough to join in with a school trip on the third floor who were having a lecture from a Holocaust survivor. Quite a moving event and we were also able to chat to him afterwards. We would recommend this as a must do if you are anywhere in the area.Free parking and a great Greek restaurant across the road!
