This place is good for tourists and other casual wildlife watchers. But if you're a somewhat serious wildlife photographer looking for cool bird photo-ops, avoid this place. This place looked so dead to me. The other photographers in the sit (lugging long lenses agreed). You will definitely see Anhingas and their signature wing spread easily and of course gators. Lots of them. Even saw a baby gator. Saw one purple gulinule (i'm spelling it wrong) bird and grey egrets (2 of them). That's about it. Nothing else. Got so bored I left in an hour. (I drove 1.5 hours to get here). Going to try ECO Pond, Mzarek pond next time.
Read the other detailed, positive reviews. This is to confirm what they say. We had an absolutely delightful time here. So much wildlife to see! It was a wonderful experience for us. For us, this would be a must see attraction in the Everglades.
I believe the number of birds and wildlife in general in Everglades National Nark has been on the decrease in past several years. Several rangers also agreed with this opinion. With that said, Anhinga Trail is still a good place to see gators and birds. The trail is named after the many Anhingas (the bird) you will see drying themselves off on or near the trail. YES YOU WILL SEE GATORS HERE!!! The cool thing about Anhinga Trail is it's located only a short distance from Florida City and U.S. Highway #1. From Highway #1 it's only about 15-20 minutes to Anhinga Trail. If you're smart, you'll stop for a milkshake at Robert Is Here (no, I don't work for them) along the way. If you really start to get into this everglades thing and you want a chance to see American Crocodiles, you'll need to drive down to Flamingo (about a 45-60 minute drive). You may also see loads of nesting Ospreys in the Flaming area.
we were in a hurry so did not take the guided tour. Walk the loop ourselves and were amazed at all we saw. Ton of gators sunning and swimming. We will go back at some point and take the tour, I am sure it will add a lot yo the experience.
This was an amazing location, but it is close to the road so lazy stupid tourist will be out trying to hug wild animals. I can only hope they get their eyes poked out. This is a great place to see all kinds of wildlife that is very close to the trails. Everyone warms about the birds that will eat your car but we didn't have any problems in the afternoon.
We went to Royal Palms Visitor Center and walked the Anhinga Trail, seeing many alligators and birds. We chatted with a ranger about differences between alligators and crocodiles and he suggested that we drive down to the Flamingo Visitor Center and see crocodiles. We drove 34 miles to Flamingo, saw one croc (green markings) and the noses of several manatees as they came up for air. It was a waste of time and gasoline. And the Shark Valley Visitor Center was also a waste of time.
From alligators to turtles and so many kind of birds, this short walk always has something to see. Despite there always being several people, the area maintains its serenity and the wildlife shine.
If your a birder or just enjoy seeing a great variety of birds close up this is the place to visit. This was the 4th time that we visited and we always had some interesting experience. This time it was an Anhinga watching a rather large fish and then going through the juggling act so that it could go down its gullet. It was most impressive. The best time to visit is near sunset when all of the birds come in to roost. This is a must for any birder.
As many others have said, if you only have time for one stop in the Everglades, the Anhinga Trail has to be it. But if you can give the Park the time it deserves, save Anhinga for last. The other stops along the drive to Flamingo are well worth seeing, and for the most part each is a little different from the others, sometimes in subtle but fascinating ways. None is as spectacular, or packs so much to see in such a short distance, as Anhinga, and if you go to Anhinga first, you might find yourself overlooking some of the great things the others offer.
10 dollars to get into the Everglades National Park - and you're good to go!The Anhinga Trail is the first place you run into - and I can see, without having gone any further into the National Park, why it's #1 on the Tripadvisor List!Amazing wildlife, we were literally stepping over alligators on our way round the trail - which is very easy to do. We were six people spanning from age 4 to 72 - nobody complained! We spent an hour and a half looking at the wildlife. Fantastic. So much action, birds, alligators and - being january - no mosquitoes!
There are a lot of gators and birds. Magnificent views of the lakes. I'd like to go to this place next time.
We visited in late February in what a park ranger said was a particularly dry spell, even for the dry time of the year, and still saw tons of wildlife. Right at the beginning of the trail we saw an anhinga nest with two fuzzy white babies. Very cool. Lots of gators, anhinga and cormorants. But also many other creatures (turtles, fish, vultures) to keep it interesting. We saw a volunteer at the end of the trail who answered our questions and then shared more of his vast knowledge with us. These guys really know their stuff, so be sure to chat them up. We got there around 930a and it was definitely getting crowded. There was plenty of space for everyone, but I bet we would have seen more creatures if it had been quieter. If you go early, do cover your car with one of the tarps provided, as the vultures are said to enjoy playing with windshield wipers.
We loved the anhinga trail, it is about 1/2 mile long and flat and over the water. It took us about 1-1 1/2 hours. We saw birds, gators, turtles everywhere and up very close. Kids LOVED it! It would have been nice to go on a guided tour. Bring binoculars! We brought a picnic but there were no picnic spots nearby. A great half day trip.
