We arrived at this attractions 5 minutes after the last tour started and instead of allowing us to go ahead and catch up with the group we were turned away. We were able to look in the lobby and the ground though, would really have loved to tour the house but we weren't even given the opportunity....shame on the lady in the ticket shop!
We learned a lot ot The Casements, and I enjoyed learning about the Cleveland connection, as I am a native Clevelander.
The Casements was a spur of the moment stop. We enjoyed the free tour of the house and learning about the house's history and about Ormond Beach's car racing history. Unfortunately, most of the rooms are used for other purposes, but we did get to see a few rooms that were used by Rockefeller.
This is well worth a stop. Lots of history here. This was John D Rockefeller's Winter home. You'll hear how the family didn't want the house after Mr. Rockefeller died and how it was transformed into a school for girls and after the school closed the house was home to vagrants that nearly burnt it down. It has been restored and brought back to life. Beautiful. It's open Mon-Sat. But closed on some days for private functions.
This was a nice find on our trip to Florida. The tour is run by volunteers, so each visit will be different. They give a great insight to John D. Rockefeller and his winter home.
Very well done tour with lots of information about a very amazing man. Unbelievable that it is still standing after seeing the photos of how it had deteriorated in the 1970s. So glad it was saved! Definitely worth the time to take the tour. Then sit on the benches in the front park and forget all your troubles as you watch the birds and the boats on the Hailfax River!
Enjoyed seeing this & the info provided by video & our excellent docent. Surprised that admission was free, but we did see a place to make a donation & gladly did so.
John D Rockefeller's Winter home. Surprisingly modest. Maintained by the town, free admission. Good docent. Great little momentoes!
The basements is the oil Barron 's Florida home. The tour guide was very informative and gave us an insight into the life of Rockefeller.
Although their website said they were open- we were there on 2 different days... Dec 26 and 27 2014 and found the place locked up. No sign with holiday hours... very disappointing!!!!!
Paid a visit to this nicely restored home of John D. Rockefeller. Your guide provided much history on the home. One tidbit of interest is that JDR employed a team of doctors to find to best climate to live in and selected Ormond Beach, FL. If you are interested in historical abodes should pay this place a visit. Gift shop offers some good items.
Terrible staff that doesn't have a clue what they are doing. Our visit was a disaster and we do not recommend that you waste your time until major staff changes are made.
Although Casements is not fully furnished with former owner J. D. Rockefeller's items, the pictures and newspaper articles along with personal letters tell the story of his life during the winters he spent here. While reading them, you can picture how it all looked when he lived there. Very interesting.
The story goes John D Rockefeller bought this location for his house because the hotel across the street was ripping him off. It is always decorated at Christmas, but I feel they could do a little more with it.
Think about what it must have been like for Rockefeller to live here at the beginning of the century. Scenically located on the river but the view is now the bridge and the condos across the street. Frequent special evens and the occasional cooking class make this an Ormond treat. Beautiful at Christmas time.
