Wish we had more time to explore this museum. We didn't even get to the second floor. They had a great exhibit on loan from the Smithsonian, along with great artifacts and exhibits about New Smyrna Beach. No charge, donations accepted.
This is a very small but very interesting museum focusing on the unusual history of New Smyrna Beach. Admission is free but a donation is accepted. The museum is run by local volunteers who are friendly, helpful, and informative. Special programs are available from time to time. If local history interests you, this is a good place to spend an hour or two.
A little, well done museum that has well documented local history and history of the State of Florida. In the middle was a special exhibit from the Smithsonian covering photographs of people working in different time periods in America. There was a phone number with #tags to use on your cell phone for more information. Since the exhibits are not isolated from one another, it's can be an interesting mix. The museum fits New Smyrna perfectly - not some fancy glass and chrome place, but a comfortable friendly place. It is a by-donation museum.
We love to visit historical museums--to support the local effort to preserve history and, of course, to learn a little. This is an exceptional little museum with lots of video information, touch drawers and excellent displays. It is a by-donation museum.
The NSB Museum of History is a fantastic collection of the history of what makes NSB the beautiful community that it is for all of us to enjoy. The long history dating back to the Turnbull Colony is fascinating.
We were pleasantly surprised to find this museum on a dreary day in New Smyrna Beach. They just opened the exhibit from the Smithsonian about working people in America. It was arranged very well. The information about local history was also intriguing. We spent over an hour browsing through the museum. Obviously the staff and museum guides were proud of their work.
So much more to see than I expected, lots of items and photos of the development of The town. There are films and interactive aspects to the exhibitions.
Very interesting story of New Smyrna. Artifacts, storyboards and videos walk you through a time line of the history of the town. Volunteers at the museum were very friendly and helpful.
This museum is set up like a journey across time with the different periods that Florida was under. It has sections for every major time frame in history like Spanish Rule, Civil War etc. I specifically enjoyed the three videos in the inner room that talks about early plantation workers. The volunteers at the museum were extremely friendly and were happy to explain the museum to us. Admission is by donation and we bought some things from their store.
it was cool & foggy one morning so we decided to go have breakfast at Jason's then go to the Museum that is just around the corner. We've been coming here about 20 years off and on but had never been here..lots of photos, artifacts and displays that showed the history of the area I think knowing NSB and surrounding area helps with the presentation. If it was your first time to NSB it wouldn't mean as much. The section on making turpentine was esp interesting as I had to do a report on it in Jr High ( this display was better than my pre-internet presentation) was nice they way they had this laid out from prehistoric through both English and Spanish colonial times, right up to today.
This is our local museum and is far better than one would expect in a small beach town. The museum has many great activities. Very friendly staff. Worth a visit.
The New Smyrna Museum of History is a nicely organized small museum which gives a great overview of the area's history. The audio visual presentations outline the fascinating events in the colonization of this area. In addition there are hundreds of photos, maps, drawings, and artifacts. Admission is by donation and this is a very worthwhile attraction for those interested in the history of the area.
Another hidden gem! We enjoyed this museum very much. Loved learning about the local NSB history. Lot's of fun stuff to look at and great photos too. Loved it!
Staff is great. They take great pride in explaining the history of NSB. I would highly recommend it.
It is a museum unlike most. No dusty stuffed animals with glass eyeballs, this small building located on Sams Avenue on the mainland has packed in its four walls a sophisticated layout for you and your family to really dig deep into the life line of what makes this town so delightful and intriguing. If you want to read everything and look at everything consider three hours at a minimum to absorb it all. It is a by donation museum so be generous.
