Its a hustle and bustle of people to see, outfits to barely be wearing, restaurants to experience and clubs and bars to get get silly in... Its lively, fun, energetic, and even at times, romantic. Depending on your mood, you can pretty much find what you you're looking for. We did a nice romantic dinner one night (best to walk on the beach side to enjoy each others company and not deal with the riff raff.) Otherwise its like walking through the crowded touristy streets of Thailand, Greece, and Spain... You'll have men and women haggling prices, offering 2 for 1 happy hour cocktails and much much more all to get you to have a seat and hang out at their, usually overpriced for what it is, establishment... But then hey... its South Beach Miami... why not try at least once!! We did.
Unfortunately, just returned to Philadelphia after a 4 day escape to Miami. Ocean Drive is the best and very unique. When traveling to South Beach go to Larios for excellent Cuban food and Mangos for fish tacos and sandwiches, and the Clevelander for drinks. Can't wait till we return.
If you're coming to South Beach it is a must to walk along Ocean Drive and soak up the sites. While the art deco buildings look lovely in the sunshine, it just reminds me of an American Blackpool!!!
This is a very laid back place full of characters and atmosphere you could people watch all day and when not doing that appreciate the architecture with wonderful Art Deco buildings.
I loved the Ocean Drive location for the palm trees, ocean and beach access, and art deco buildings. top at 5th and Ocean and rent a bike, then ride all the way North on the boardwalk to get a great view of what Ocean drive has to offer. The hotels on Ocean drive give you the real South Beach experience.
I lived in Miami for over three years, and I actually have mixed feelings about South Beach in general. I think I grew tired of it. BUT, if you're visiting, I guarantee you will have a fun filled time. Clubs I recommend: Clevelander, Nikki Beach, Purdy Lounge and LoveHate (more for locals and not on Ocean Drive…but no cover). Clubs that are overpopulated and OVERPRICED UP THE WAZOO thanks to google searches such as "places to visit in Miami": Mansion, Cameo, and LIV, among others. Literally, the men will pay at least 60 to get in, and unless you know a promoter, girls will have to pay $40, and you're gonna wait in line for a long time. Also, the clubs are empty at 11pm. You can probably get in for free before midnight, but the party doesn't start until after midnight. If you're in Miami to party, then do it - but be prepared to spend lots of money outside and inside the club. Now Ocean drive is one big party. Make sure you hit up Wet Willies and order a Superman. During the day, you can get your drink on, head over to the beach, lay out, and drink some more. You can drink on the beach, but be semi-discreet. Like, don't drown. There are lots of restaurants on the strip - beautiful exotic girls will be standing outside trying to get you to eat the same looking foods (pasta dishes, oversized crabs, etc). Don't waste your time. Head to Puerto Sagua or David's Cafe for some more authentic cuban food! More affordable too. That's all I can think of right now. Enjoy
If you are staying in South Beach you must 'cruise' along Ocean Drive. Unless you have a Ferrari or Maserati I suggest you just walk or sit in on the great restaurants/bars and watch the decadence go by....cheers!
Great strip to be on, your in everything and you don't miss anything either. Definitely will stay on this street.
I enjoyed seeing the Art Deco buildings. The area is beautiful and I would have liked to explore further. Traffic very congested and parking hard to find. Spent more time looking for a place to stop. Would try again without driving - just didn't have the time this trip
Ocean Drive IS South Beach. Take a leisurely stroll from one end to the other (about 15 blocks) and you will see the history of early Miami from the 1920s to the early 1940s encapsulated in beautifully restored art deco hotels and buildings. It's hard to imagine that just 35 years ago this place was almost a slum. But the fabulous beach and park rehab in 1988 started a renaissance the produced the lively, hip, touristy attraction now known as South Beach. Definitely worth a visit and a tour. Private guided tours can be easily arranged and are worth it for all the hidden history.
It almost feels like you are in a different country. As you walk down the sidewalk, people almost harrass you with flyers, promos, specials and anything else you could imagine. Just be cautious!
