Would love to visit, but the price of admission is ridiculous ...Even for Vermonters! Plenty of free trails to be found in the Green Mountains. I pay enough in Vermont state taxes that admission should be free!

In addition to a fair weather campground with many tent sites, this park sports enough walking trails to keep walkers busy for two to three hours. Very nice, and popular with the locals too!

I must admit I didn't have high expectations for Fort Dummer State Park, given it's location just outside the center of Brattleboro and right off of highway 91. Having said that, it both exceeded my expectations and at the same time was a disappointment.I was expecting a fair amount of noise from the highway, that was not the case and it's really sort of amazing given how close it is. So that was a major plus. I was expecting a well run park like the other Vermont parks I have been to. I found this one lacking. The park itself recently started thinning out trees to bring in more light and diversify the ground cover. Unfortunately, a good deal of the fallen timber and brush is still on the ground. It's a bit like a campground in a sawmill right now. The campsites were kept up as were the bathrooms. There is fire wood available at the ranger station at the entrance, unlike other parks I have been to it was locked up after hours. When I came back to the park after dinner I was unable to get fire wood. Also worth noting: the ranger station is quite a way away from the campsites, you won't be able to carry the wood, you will have to drive. If you are like I was, that means going to the site and unpacking and coming back for wood. The other point about this park in contrast to others, because the ranger station is so far away from the camp sites they don't seem very connected to what's going on. Or perhaps they are and aren't concerned, it's hard to say. When I checked in I was told there were two large groups at either ends of the campground. "And they may be up late drinking and being loud" I made the mistake of taking that too lightly. Without question it was the loudest most obnoxious group of campers I've ever heard. The question remains; it that the norm, something the park turns a blind eye to, or are they simply oblivious or lazy? Hard to say, Basically, it's a convenient pit stop off the highway and also extremely close the Brattleboro if you are visiting people in the area or have things to to there. It is not a place you book to go for a extended camping trip.
