I understand that this site has now been moved to a new location by the local historical society. It used to be right off the highway and if you timed it right it was open for tours. There was also an old school house next to it and displays of local artifacts.
My wife and I had the good fortune to have a special showing of this 18th century cabin by a very knowledgeable couple who have a sixty plus year history with this historical site and were able to describe in detail the history of the cabin and its' contentsThis large one room log cabin with a loft that was inhabited as late as 1945 is filled with furnishings and various household tools and utensils that date back to frontier times. Everything is catalogued so that you can find out each items use. There are hundreds of items on display. .The adjoining one room school house is also a must see if you visit the cabin. The entire visit was well worth the time and would be of interest to young and old alike.
Meeting the knowledgeable, local volunteer docent was worth the stop. She was in period dress and knew everything. If you like to see what life was really like for the early settlers, this is worth a peek.
We stopped by on a Friday and were pleasantly surprised. The interior is decorated nicely, and all of the items inside are very interesting. The guide was very friendly and knowledgeable. We spent a good deal of time in the cabin and also checked out the schoolhouse, and tool shed. The hours are limited, so be sure to check that they are open before making the trip there. Postcards and notecards of the cabing are for sale for very reasonable prices.
Wasn't open when I rode by but nice from the exterior. Hopefully can see it next time. Great cows in a pasture with views of the lake and mountains behind up the street.
Vermont has done its best to preserve this historic attraction. If the Open flag is up, stop in. Guide is well versed in the local lure and will make your visit come alive. Tell her I said Hi Mom!
