Our school visits here at least once a year to tour and do research. The staff is awesome, knowledgeable, friendly and accommodating. So many collections to explore and investigate and experience. Check it out, you will not be sorry you did!
A great place to spend a wet Saturday afternoon. A well organised museum charting the Democratic development of the State of Vermont. The short film gives a good insight into the early History and people involved in it. It also has a section on Ethan Allen, whom we were aware of but did not know anything about him. A very easy History lesson is given here without numbing the mind, it also shows we have still not learned from History. For the minimal price you pay it is well worth a visit.
If you are interested in Vermont history, this is a good place to start going back to pre-revolutionary war days. We only had about 40 minutes there as part of a group tour which really is not enough time to do it justice. I would schedule about 2 hours as you need to do quite a bit of reading to find out what the museum is all about.
We spent 90 minutes wandering through many informative visits. I learned a new facet about the American Revolution involving the clash between the Grantees and the Yorkers. The state motto "Freedom and Unity" gave me pause to think aboutwhat is happening to our society today.
The VHSM does an excellent job of exploring Vermont's history and its place in US history without going overboard. It also does this quickly while giving the visitor with the feeling s/he has learned some information.
This museum has a lot of information and you need to take a little bit of time to read all the information you see as you walk through the exhibits. It was very informative and we both enjoyed it. The cost is $5 per person unless you are 62 or older. Given all you have to see and read I would say one to two hours is the minimum. There is a small gift shop with souvenirs and many books about the history of the area. A nice museum to visit if you like history and want to learn about Vermont's history.
We originally wsent there with the hopes of finding some old pictures from the early 1900's as we're writing an ancestry book about our grandparents who worked in Montpelier and our parents who were born in Montpelier. We were very successful in obtaining our goal. My cousin and I are in our 60's and it only cost $3 each with the senior discount.
This is a small but thoughtful exhibit showcasing Vermont history. I learned a bunch of new things and appreciated the thoughtful uses of display text along with lots of activities for kids.
We learned a lot about the history of Vermont. The museum told both sides of the Ethan Allen story, not the whitewashed version one usually gets. It had a lot of interesting information about the whole history of Vermont packed into a reasonable amount of space. This is definitely worth an hour or two.
The Vermont Historical Society Museum provides a fairly extensive review of the history of the fourteenth state. I expected the museum to consist of a few small rooms, but it's actually larger than anticipated. We spent about an hour at the museum, but we could have spent another hour if we were not pressed for time. There are a number of exhibits set up specifically for children, and I can imagine that many schoolkids visit the museum each year. It was fairly quiet on a weekday in the middle of the day when we visited.Overall, the museum is definitely worth a stop if you will be near Montpelier. The museum doesn't have parking, but we managed to find a metered spot on the street in front.
It was free admission for the 3rd of July. It was a great way to cool off on a very warm day. They also have a special display of one room school houses right now.
A walk through path telling you about the history of Vermont, with some artifacts. It's not a large exhibit, but it talks through the early settlement and conflicts to today.
This is a nice museum with well-done displays. I especially liked the Civil War artifacts. The museum provides a good overview of Vermont's history, and included some things that relate well to kids.
A small, but well laid out museum that is worth the visit. It provides a good overview of Vermont's history. There were things we learned that we never knew about the Green Mountain Boys.
A fascinating look at the state's history and its role in American history. Loved the hogan, the film, and the artifacts. Great stuff!
