wells river - state welcome center

This is a bizarre attraction. After asking a question, we were gruffly directed to sign the book and "look around". But there's nothing in Wells River, except the Happy Hour.

We were going from the White Mountains to Portland, ME. Nice place to stop and gather information from 3 states. Since they are not state funded, they had maps and info about things to do in Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. The man there was very nice and knowlegeable .

In such a tiny little town it was nice to have a place to stretch our legs and get some info. Nice lady, very helpful.

It was early July, and we were headed for Maine, and to get there were driving across Vermont and New Hampshire via scenic Route 302. As we approached Wells River we saw a sign saying there was a Vermont Welcome Center in town. The Center was easy to find… right on Railroad Street in a cute wooden cabin. We stopped in as we were desperate to get a New Hampshire Highway Map before crossing the border just down the road.We received a friendly greeting from the man working that morning and he was quite helpful in providing us with the information we were looking for, as well as more about the region (they carry info for both Vermont & NH). There was a certain element of down-home friendliness that extends throughout Vermont and its people. And although we were “passing thru” he suggested that after we crossed into NH, we might want to take a couple of minutes to check out the Bath Covered Bridges (off Highway 302). Turned out to be a fabulous suggestion !!Although our visit was short… it was memorable… we were quite impressed by the gentleman and his good nature… he even came outside to wave us good-bye.*NOTE – There are 3 Bridges in the Bath area… we checked out two of them, and both were fabulous. First the # 27 Haverhill-Bath Bridge, the oldest authenticated covered Bridge in NH (Route 302 at Hwy 135) and then # 28 Bath Bridge which unlike the previous more “historic” bridge… was OPEN to car traffic (Route 302 at West Bath Road). They were fun to visit and photograph.
