Stayed at The Woodstock Inn and lift tickets were free. Charming little ski area -- it's not Killington but for free -- who's complaining!
I've been skiing Suicide Six since I was a very little kid, and I still love to ski it as an adult. The runs are short and the terrain is limited, but it's still a great little mountain. For its small stature, it's actually surprisingly steep, with some nice, challenging runs on the front side and in the glades. The Pomfret Plunge is one of my favorite runs, and The Face is an awesome cruiser; the backside Gully is always a fun run, too. The lodge is cozy, the staff are nice and helpful, and the skiers are mostly locals out to catch a couple runs. To add to the charm of the place, this just happens to be where (arguably) the first mechanical ski lift in North America was built, in 1934; the lodge has a little exhibit with photos from the mountain's early history. Tapping into the great skiing history of the area, they've resurrected some of their old logos and advertisements, which you can buy as t-shirts and posters in the ski shop. Lastly, I love to support this mountain, but for a small place, the weekend lift tickets can be a little steep. If you're a guest at the nearby Woodstock Inn, you can ski for free midweek, but you have to pay retail on weekends and holidays like the rest of us. I would recommend buying your tickets a few days in advance online if you can, as you can usually find some great deals – you can even get a discounted voucher for lunch in the lodge.
The slopes are great for kids up to about 12-15 years old. The teachers and the lodge personnel are great and the children really enjoy it.
We try to ski at resorts that are family friendly. This is our favorite spot because the kids are comfortable skiing many of the trails and we can go off and ski some of the more challenging trails. The kids love the food and the lodge. We love that it never too crowded and the lodge is a great spot to easily meet up with the kids. The surrounding town of Woodstock is also great to walk around. We will continue to have this be our number one family ski spot.
We found this place and thought we'd try it out for a change from the big mountain scene. What an awesome surprise! No crowds and no lines! Perfect small atmosphere. the base lodge, parking and lift are all super convenient and centrally located. Super affordable and the trails were nicely groomed. We will definitely be back! A tip if you are skiing on a friday, by 1pm busloads of kids arrived to have their winter outdoor sports program and made it just a completely different experience. If you don't mind that sort of thing then have at it! But we just skied for the morning and took off when all the kids took over the mountain.
Suicide Six is a great place to learn to ski and to vacation with family and friends. Woodstock is a georgous little town in VT that has so much to offer. Staff is extremely friendly and informative and the mountain and resort is managed very, very well. The varied terrain, from beginner to advanced skiers and snowboarders, is always enjoyable. I try to go back every year!
I skied with my 11-year-old son during the week between Christmas and New Year, when there was little snow. Only two runs were open (luckily both green for beginners like us), so we went many times down the "bunny" hill using the J-bars, then attempted the "Easy Mile." On a regular day with everything open, we would have tried a couple of the other greens before the mile, working our way up in steepness. Without that option and with the existing small layer of snow very icy and crusty, we both had difficulty controlling our descent and each wiped out a few times. It's too bad, because I think we would had loved it if our skis had been able to grip a bit better, but the ice didn't really allow for that and beginners like us had trouble. I wish that 1) they would have told me about the conditions and closed runs before I bought the lift tickets at the window, and 2) that they would have made use of their snow-making machines, as they advertise online. Beyond that, I think this is a great smaller place to go for a family to ski that's less expensive than Killington. The people helping with equipment rental were great, and the instructors that I witnessed were terrific.
As a ski newbie, I was very apprehensive about the entire experience. In December of 2013, I spent the day (and had a semi-private ski lesson) at another nearby ski resort that made me feel like they were herding sheep. I had never put ski boots on, nor had I ever used any of the equipment, and, despite my voicing concern, there was no help to be found. In March of 2014 I decided to give it another try at Suicide Six. S6 is full of helpful, caring employees that hand-hold you step-by-step when fitting your gear (if needed)---I did NOT have numb calves after THIS experience. I decided on a private lesson and had a GREAT time on the "baby slope"! I highly recommend not only for a newbie like me, but for anyone that doesn't want to feel like they are being herded!
Went on frugal Friday - what a great deal! Great trails and lunch area. Rentals on site. Perfect for family getaway to nearby Woodstock or Quechee.
My family had the BEST ski weekend at Suicide Six. The staff is genuinely caring and friendly. The instruction was the best I have experienced in the Northeast. Hardly any lines on the weekend and a good size mountain for beginners like us. My sons loved Gordon and Sam. And I went from total beginner to skiing (slowly) a blue run with the help of Emily, Jack R. and Doug. Jack H. at the ski school desk went out of his way to be helpful and kind. The lodge is well-kept and has great historical photographs. Just be careful of speed traps en route. And, if you have a fifth-grader, go to skivermont.com to apply for the passport that enables you to save money on lift tickets.
While this mountain does not have lots of bells and whistles it does have great runs. Our children are still beginning to develop their confidence on skis and this mountain encourages just that. All the runs end at the lodge. The green runs are long enough to keep the kids happy and the blue and black runs end up at the same chair lift so everyone can meet up. The lifts are not the newest but they do their job. The staff in the rental room are very helpful and the food is more edible than most ski mountains. Parking is easy, lines are short and the atmosphere is friendly. We would absolutely recommend this mountain to people that want to enjoy their time skiing with their family and do not want the pushy hustle and bustle you find at other mountains.
A+ all around...Customer service, atmosphere, condition of mountain/snow, knowledge of staff, etc.. We have been going to Suicide for the past 20 years and absolutely love it. It is such a great family oriented place with enough to do for everyone and every level.
What an amazing weekend at this Mountain! The torch light parade was the most amazing scene I have ever encountered. There must have been 100 skiers in perfect formation skiing down the hill. Even better was the fireworks display that rivaled the annual July 4th routine at the esplanade in Boston. Had a chance to meet the GM Charles Vanderstreet and commend him on the wonderful night. We were in from DC and this was the highlight of our families vacation. Thanks Charles, Julie, Jimbo and Mickey!! The Waltons
Skied the day after New Year's Day in the falling snow-gentle and beautiful-people outfitting us for the day were terrific!
We had not been in skis in a long time and came here with a good friend who is able to ski. My son took a 2 hour snow boarding lesson with Jackie, she was terrific!!! Her mom caught some great photos of them snowboarding and shared them with me. The staff at the rental shop went above and beyond fitting boots and skis and helping you in and out of your equipment. The mountain was not overly crowded so it was not overwhelming when trying to get reacquainted with skiing. My only disappointment was when my 9 year old son was finished with his 2 hour lesson we had one hour left to ski, from 3-4pm and he had to pay for a full half day pass for the last hour, I didn't think that was fair I think the lift pass should have been included in the price of the lesson. We will still come back because it is overall a great place for families. Jill Albanese
