Seeing Devo in 2008 at the historic Civic Theatre was a truly memorable experience. It's a gorgeous venue and the sound was particularly good. Compound the virtues of the space with its importance to the band......and color me happy.
Of course, the civic is a beautiful building. As a child I greatly enjoyed traveling to Cleveland to see the Nutcracker each Christmas. Now that my child is old enough to sit and enjoy a show I thought the civic would be the ideal location. Closer than Cleveland, interesting theater for little people to discover. I have to say the Akron Ballet Company was completely unimpressive. They did not put on a good performance. They did not have coordination of group movements and the individual dancers left much to be desired. My child has seen previews for the nutcracker, seen many cartoon versions of the story. He asked "when's the nutcracker going to do his jumps with splits?". If a kid noticed, many elements of the play were diminished by the lack of skill or direction of the dancers. We will go back to the civic! But never to see an Akron Ballet show again. I suggest everyone visit the civic if you haven't before. Beware the ballet though!
The Civic Theater in Akron is an unbelievably enchanting place to visit. There is so much history in this building. Free tours are offered several times a year. Even if you have visited many times in the past, you haven't seen this theater until you take the tour. There is actually a theme that is replicated in the design and decoration of the theater. Watch the clouds pass overhead! Count the stars in the sky! Listen to the oldtime organ. In December you can see the preview of the 5th season of Downton Abbey ahead of the TV date - on the big screen. I haven't seen this advertised, but free tickets are currently available at the Box Office which is now located across the street in the Ohio Building. We have seen theater, movies, ballet, concerts and movies at this lovely historic part of Akron's charm.
If you like older venues with some actual character, this is the place to visit! It recently underwent renovations, and although it still has a long way to go, it offers so much history. The architecture, the antiques and overall feel of the place was really nice. Seats are comfortable, and our view of the stage from the Loge section was great.Another perk? Free parking in the back, and free street parking after 6:00 pm during the week and all weekend. They need to advertise their handicap accessibility though; there were limited signs on where to park and enter/exit for that.
this place will take you back in time. it is a really cool theater lots of good concerts there from blues to rock and even country
what a beautiful, historic place to attend a concert! saw "who's bad" the michael jackson tribute and cannot imagine having more fun at any other venue.
The Civic Theater is a great venue. We see shows here several times a year. There is plenty of parking and the theater is beautiful. The have a variety of shows for everyone. Also there are plenty of places to eat before a show within walking distance.
Find a reason, any reason, to visit this theater. We were lucky enough to catch Wilco playing this gorgeous place and will never forget it. The ushers and other staff are
What an AWESOME place....i was in awe of the beauty of this theatre...it is so nice to see them bringing it back to it's glory...wish more place would do this.
This Theatre has gone through a renovation that rivals that of the Cleveland Place House Sq. Theaters! It is smaller so you get to sit closer to all the concerts and plays. They do a good job here and parking is close!
On the 3rd Tuesday of each month, you can take a free 90 min. tour of the Akron Civic Theater. Building began in 1926 and was finished in 1929. The tour describes the history and architecture of this grand theatre that was saved from demolition. The interior resembles a Moorish castle and a $20.6 million restoration has been done. The theatre is once again open to the public and usually has a full schedule of events. I would strongly recommend this tour if you are in the Akron area on the 3rd Tuesday of any month. It is breath taking to say the least....
Love this place, they dont make them like this anymore and they get great shows... highly recommended
We have taken out daughter to see this every year for the last 13 years and it is better every year. The theater is unbelievable with its moorish setting and moving ceiling.
This old time theatre is a gem. There's nothing like seeing a show with the great ambiance of a truly unique theatre. Get there early so you can see and hear the organ that rises out of the floor. If you have an opportunity, take the backstage tour that is offered once in awhile. If you're there for a movie, sit in the balcony, front row. Popcorn & front row of the balcony, doesn't get any better than that!
if u like old theaters with their ornate style, you should enjoy this one. the seats are nice & comfortable. also drinks were availableduring this show.
