Especially if you have school aged children. The butterfly house is a nice place to spend 2 hours or so walking around, visiting the big house where you can ask questions or buy a few science related items. During the end of October they have Spooky Science which is wonderful event again for the kids. The actually butterfly house is only $2.00 but call first because they are only out during the end of summer. They land on your clothes and it is a fun experience to see some many types of butterflies. I loved the hands on things to do in the greenhouse. The staff here loves their jobs and it is fun to take the worksheet and discover so many interesting facts. To the right of the driveway you will also find a short course exercise station that was great. Not quite so easy for wheelchairs but everything else was very enjoyable here. Recommend this place on kids bucket list.
I went with some college friends and we had so much fun at the gardens. We learned a lot, we had fun trying new things like tasting a fig and smelling scented plants. It was fun being a kid again and going on a scavenger hunt and playing with butterflies landing on our noses. It's free admission except for the butterfly house, which is still only $3. The only thing that I was a little disappointed about is that they didn't have a very wide variety of butterflies there. It was still a great time though. We also loved spotting the turtles and the toads in their cute little villages.
Beech Creek is a beautiful little place to explore. The hiking trails are easy but scenic. The butterfly house is really pretty. The butterflies are everywhere and so close. You can put sugar water on a qtip and catch one. The gardens are beautiful and well maintained. There is also a turtle pond that is really nice. I live locally and love taking my 8 month old here. She always has a blast.
We had a good time walking around the site. The plants were beautiful and the staff very friendly. We did not plan on buying plants but there selection was big and we found a few that we just had to have.
We took our two five year olds and a thirteen year old to the spooky science. They had a blast. They made goop, corn husk dolls. Dug for bones and tried homemade Apple cider and Apple butter. We got to see some bats and owls up close. We even seen a mad scientists blow up a pumpkin. It's was a fun filled family night.
My boyfriend took me here as part of our 2 year anniversary weekend. It is beautiful and educational. When we left the garden, he was my fiance <3 We have been married for a year now and I look forward to taking our children there someday!*We visited August 2010, but that wasn't an option to select
the butterflys are just beautyful and the flowers are just as pretty looking around is a nice walk so take the family for a nice nature walk
The Botanical Garden is quite a find on the outskirts of rural Alliance, OH. If you visit in mid to late summer there is a wonderful butterfly house where you can see native butterflies in all stages of development, from egg to larva to pupa to adult. Since the entire life cycle is on display, you will also find host plants the insects need for development. The butterfly house is the only part of Beech Creek having a nominal fee. We've visited many times just for the butterflies. There is also a modest model railroad exhibit which is fascinating to view, especially when it is operating (phone for hours of operation: 330-829-7050). And finally, in the spring Beech Creek has a plant sale with the widest variety of plants I have ever seen. Herbs and spices which will grow in Ohio are especially well represented, along with a multitude of flowers.
We visited Beech Creek on an early Friday afternoon. You can walk around the gardens and paths for free. If you want to visit the butterfly house there is a small charge of two dollars per person. The butterfly house is really neat; you can take qtips and dip them in sugar water and feed the butterflies. You can buy your tickets or pick up a brochure in the welcome center that also has a small gift shop that sells a variety of nature related items. On the side of the visitors center there is a large deck with tables and chairs that overlooks trees with bird feeders. It would definitely be a nice spot for a picnic. During the summer months they sell plants and herbs in their greenhouse; I purchased some rosemary. There is also a little pond with several turtles in it. Another small building houses some different plants, a train set and educational materials. Everyone we encountered was very friendly and helpful and the lady in the butterfly house shared a lot of information and was open to lots of questions.I recommend a visit; without the small fee to get into the butterfly house everything else is free. It’s perfect for children because it’s educational and interactive. If you’re looking for something to do outside for an afternoon on a nice day you’ll probably enjoy visiting.
A lovely place to enjoy nature! Come to walk in the woods, visit the butterfly house, and enjoy the beautiful flower beds. Children will love the play area and the science "hands on" displays.
My kids and I have gone several times. The love to feed the butterflies and have them so close. Very friendly, clean, and organized. Great afternoon getaway.
Nice for an afternoon outing. Loved the butterfly garden!! My children actually had butterflies landing on them and in their hands. Fun learning experience.
We've been to several butterfly gardens in major cities, but this one was really great. Not only did they have the butterflies that you could watch eating or hold on your hand, but they also had the caterpillars on the plants that the butterfly comes from. How many times have you found a caterpillar and wondered what he'll turn into?! Here you could see both versions! One bush was crawling with one type of caterpillar of various sizes because they start small and eat and eat until they get bigger to prepare for becoming a butterfly. Really well done.
The butterfly greenhouse was wonderful, my teens and younger ones enjoyed catching and examining different types of butterflies. I also enjoyed playing with my camera at the same time. The staff knows their facts, and they obviously enjoy teaching what they know. We go several times each summer, it never gets old.
