This is truly worth the trip to take the ride. The history of the canals is so interesting. We are so fortunate to have this in Coshocton. We always take out of towners here. So much history and great stories. Don't miss this.
Our guide was very good and knowledgeable which makes everything so much better. It was a beautiful fall day and quite relaxing. Before the railroad, canal travel was the preferred mode of travel and people were excited to get on board. It was an adventure to be sure! Of course the real benefit was the moving of necessary goods from one spot to another much faster than any other method. All the people involved on this canal ride were very nice and easy to talk to. I think the ride ends for the season at the end of October but keep this in mind in the Spring. Always call to make sure it's running on the day you want to go.
Our captain had a very informative and entertaining talk while riding the boat. except for the mosquitoes it was a wonderful time and would do it again, Its a must do if you go to the village.
Fred and his team are awesome. Great stories and history and a relaxing ride. Would have loved a much longer trip but it was perfect for the 4 year old.
A pleasant though short trip, smooth ride with great scenery. The narrator was well versed in the area history of the Canals and how important they were to commerce for the State of Ohio before the railroads came. Do not recommend for small children as you must sit and listen. There were several boys 8-10, they seemed to enjoy the trip and asked several questions.
A canal ride for two...we ended up being the only riders on this canal boat and could not have been happier to hear all the fascinating history from Fred, our guide. No only was Fred knowledgeable, but his quest for living life at 80+ years of age was inspiring. The ride takes about an hour, and yes, there are mosquitos, but the do offer OFF! towelettes for .50 cents each to help. Because you are traveling in still water, you will have mosquitoes, and that is not a reason to miss this opportunity...just be prepared. The canal boat was about a mile walk from Roscoe Village on a marked trail or you can drive. Boathouse has rest rooms, trinkets and cold drinks and snacks....Take a moment to pet the gentle giant horses that pull the boat to thank them for their hard work. A welcome respite will visiting Roscoe Village.
They should warn you about the mosquitoes here because they are really bad. My daughter was in tears for most of the ride and the tour guide kept giving us dirty looks. It was pretty on the canal, but not worth the hassle.
The ride is about half an hour on a canal boat pulled by a team of horses. The narrator was well informed, a retire teacher I believe.
After taking the tour at Roscoe Village, the boat ride really helped understand what it would be like to live life on the canal back in the 1800s. My children loved the horses and the captain's stories of the canal. We thought it was great!
I summed it up in my title. It's a relaxing ride taking you back in time. If you're wanting a fast boat ride, this may not be for you because this boat is pulled like they were in the canal days, by horses! Woods and water obviously can cause mosquitoes, and although we never had a major issue like the posting below, we too are outdoor people and we came with repellent on. I highly recommend this unique travel back in time!
My wife and I were looking forward to the relaxing canal boat ride, but it quickly turned into a nightmare. The moment the boat pushed off we were swarmed with mosquitoes. I am an avid hiker and this swarm was exponentially worse than any I have ever seen. The tour guide was selling mosquito repellant(which felt crooked to me) but had neglected to bring enough for even our small group. When I asked if they had anymore repellant the tour guide got creepy. He leaned towards me and got within a few inches of my face and just didnt say anything until he finally turned to walk away. The mosquitos became worse and worse and being trapped on a super slow moving boat while being feasted upon felt like torture. All in all, the boat ride isn't worth eight bucks even without the mosquitos. The staff seemed poor to average as even the ticket sellers insulted us. I would only ever recommend this place to someone who had deeply wronged me. I would only ever visit again if I were a mosquito. The only positive thing that I can think of about this experience is that all of my mosquito bites will keep me from forgetting to get tested for west nile virus.
