Walked down the trails of the Sandusky river dam area to get a glimpse of what it looks like today versus 40 years ago when I made my tracks as a child. Found memories, especially with the frozen river during the winter. Simply beautiful.
My husband and I canoed starting from the Upper Sandusky Harrison Smith Park. The put in point was on the west side of the river near the railroad tracks. A little muddy but not at all a bad spot. This Ohio Wild and Scenic River was fun to canoe and so beautiful. Wooded on both banks, the trees were leafing out, we saw lots of wildflowers. We saw many deer, turtles (map turtle, snapping turtle), a baby black racer swimming, birds (kingfisher, canadian geese, ducks, and many more) and...BALD EAGLES! An immature and a mommy or two immatures, not sure. There were no trees completely blocking the river, but you do have to portage at the Old Indian Mill because of the low head dam. We had our picnic lunch there, lots of birds chirping in the trees. We did get stuck on some gravel bars from side creeks, but we were able to get out of the canoe easily and drag the canoe over. You need to canoe no later than May and you need good steering skills and know how to read the river to navigate this sometimes shallow river. We canoed 5 hours altogether and enjoyed every minute - great weather, very beautiful. Go for it, you won't be disappointed!
Fishing, rafting, even a little ice fishing. It's year-round recreation with a lovely view. Make sure to set aside some time to enjoy this hidden gem.
I love seeing the seasons change on Sandusky River! It is a place to go to just sit back and enjoy the nature around you! And you can never beat the sound of the running water, especially near the Dam! The River is always changing...there is always something to see! Take a hike or a canoe ride and see for yourself!
Downtown area from Ballville bridge to State street bridge is great for fishing and also great for spotting Bald Eagles. Have seen up to 4 at a time circle the area around State Street bridge.Awesome site to see ......

The sandusky river is a great place to fish. Downtown Fremont, by the miles newton bridge, during the white bass fishing season, many people are there. You can take a hike up the flood wall to a park , which is right off of morrison street. The river is also right under a bike trail. The bike trail starts in Fremont and goes into Clyde ohio. Lots of nature to see. great place to take your family.
