This spot is not typical of the many wineries in northeast Ohio; and that's a compliment! A few years ago this was the final stop of about seven wineries my wife, her parents, and I visited. I had kept a list of the wines I liked and what I did not like about other locations. I was not impressed with the room of tables and decorations when I walked in, but the friendliness was unmatched and the wine was the best I had tasted. I bought a case with red velvet (concord grape based table wine), blazin' blackberry, rippling raspberry, as well as a few whites for my wife without even thinking of going anywhere else. This year we returned and decided to take a chance on a few new wineries. There seems to be need to present a winery as a sophisticated and high end place with young staff who correct you on how to say "riesling" and yet their wines usually taste over produced and full of extra sugars and flavors that are not natural. It's almost as if they are out to make their product more attractive that what it is. Virant may seem unimpressive from their location to their labels on the bottle, but the surprise is how refreshingly simple their wine is and how great it tastes. Charlie, the owner, is a great guy who is full of stories on the history of wine in the area to some of the things he does to prepare his wine. Visiting Virant gives you a family feeling, but again, the wine is unmatched in the area according to my palate.
Our favorite winery. Been there many of times. There are days we will ride up on our motorcycle put 6 red in one bag and 6 white in the other bag and of course they always package it so nice for us. It is hard to pick a favorite but if this will help we have bought several cases of the blackberry over time. The owner has a plethora of wine making knowledge and is never pushy, always willing to let you try so many different wines making sure you get the right one to meet your taste. We always end up buying a case of mixed, it never seems to last in our home. Long story short we don't waste time, avoid the other wineries and come right to Virant's where you always feel like your family!!!!
My husband and I over heard family members talking about how wonderful Virant Family Winery is. We took a drive and it was well worth it. The staff was very welcoming and the facility is charming. Being dessert wine people we tried all their fruit wines. So many delightful wines to choose from. The Blazzin Blackberry will be the star wine at our Christmas/Anniversary party. We will be returning for sure.
A throw back to the 1950's... not the place to go if you are seeking sophistication, just good wines and friendly people in a relaxed atmosphere.
This little winery is absolutely mu favorite! Their Delightfully Delaware is wonderful. We are in the area in the summer, but we try to get over there whenever we can. The steak dinner is awesome. My husband questioned the plastic silverware and was told if he couldn't cut it with a plastic knife he could get his money back. It was so tender and delicious that you could almost cut it with the plastic fork. And the staff and owners are so nice. They care about their customers.
We went here as part of the Tannenbaum Trail in December (multiple years). This place is really cute and a home like feeling. The people are very friendly here. The wine is great. They have a very big selection of wine to choose from. Their fruit wines are amazing! Definitely give this winery a visit when in the Geneva area!
Ok, this winery is not decked out and made to be an atmosphere of elegance. However, the staff was extremely friendly, the wines were delicious. They have dinners you can get on certain nights and you can buy a limited menu of pizza and hamburgers and such during the rest of the time. Mary a neighbor waited on us and she really made our experience. There was a bridal or baby shower going on in the outside pavilion an inside so we really didn't look around. I would come back here again. Despite the hoopla going on we met the owner and owner's son. So we felt welcomed.
Spent sat evening for dinner. Prime rib absolutely the best, awesome. Been to five star restaurants and was not as good. Baked potato perfect. Make sure you try the wonderful choc chip cookies. Service was warm and friendly and efficient. Many very good wines, my all time favorite chiffon, also good reds. Had many great meals there from ribs to chicken.
This place has awesome food! The prime rib is top notch. The wine is great and everyone here is so welcoming. Make sure to taste the blackberry wine!
If you like sweeter fruit wines then this is the winery for you. Also the owners and staff could not be friendlier. Stopped in on a whim on a rainy Saturday and had one of the nicest experiences in quite awhile. The owner sat with us for over an hour and shared his knowledge of wine making to us, he seemed to genuinely care about our like and dislikes accordingly. He let us sample many types while not expecting anything in return, of course we purchased six bottles. Can not wait to return to sample the food and homemade cookies, a perfect way to spend a fall afternoon
We had a lovely time visiting this winery for a rehearsal dinner. The staff(Kim) made me feel at home and the wine tastings were delicious. White Silk and Chiffon recommended. Food selection could be improved upon as more people might want more of a selection.
If you are coming from out of town to try the wonderful area wineries, please dont make Virants your first stop. It can hardly compare to the others in terms of quality and atmosphere. It is a bar in my opinion. Know this beforehand and you are good bc labled as such it is a fine establishment. But I am willing to bet if this is your first impression of how we do wineries in Northeast Ohio, you wont be returning.
This winery reminded me of more "Finger Lake" atmosphere. Chicken fingers and sangria are on the menu and CCR was playing when I came in. We enjoyed a bottle of wine and the laid back atmosphere
