My first visit to the Learned Owl was in 1973. The ownership has changed several times since then but the charm is still there. It' amazing how many books are available. Special books are featured for every holiday season. The Christmas shop is a great place to find special Christmas items, book, cards etc. The staff is knowledgeable and always helpful. If you don't find what you are looking for the staff will order it for you.
I have few reasons to take me to Hudson. One of the most compelling reasons is the chance to visit the Learned Owl Bookstore - which is a privately owned independent bookstore. Located in the center of town in what might be called a acquaint shopping or business district not too far from the park and the academy. This store is owned by a lady who wanted to operate a small independent bookstore and she today deserves much credit for doing as well as she has done these past few years. I remember going there several times last century. My principal areas of reading interests have to do with subject matter found in academic assignments and dealing with course work taken at colleges. I find here many academic books with content suitable for a visit to the college bookstore. I go there now for a chance to find a number of books with academic content - biographies and the like. There are good books that seem to not sell elsewhere - like large over size big thick hard cover books dealing with Baroque and related forms of art found in several parts of the world especially in Europe. I found one of these books and it was a treasure of full page color photographs with references and good reading of essays written by scholars with noteworthy credentials. You just can't find these books at other places. One of my most profound wishes is for the bookstore to relocate to a new location with larger floor space. So much more could be done at a larger store. There are books for children and readers with other interests. Seating area is limited. You can walk along the street and dream about how maybe your family was related to original settlers here following the revolutionary war but it is not the same until you go into this store that you realize where you are. This small store is close to paradise for book lovers. Not all the store are worth visiting. But this book store will delight and surprise you with news about regional and local musical events taking place in Hudson and in near-bye communities I am sure that people associated with the local Western Reserve Academy probably breathe more easily knowing that this store is near-bye with things for students to buy. The absence of a coffee ship please me and it might have much to with the lack of space more than anything else. There are personnel who know about certain subject matters and books. One is a young man named Cole. You should not be obligated to bring your handkerchief and be ready to cry at the mention the demise of so many other small private books stores in recent years. Yet there are reasons to make you smile at being at an old fashioned bookstore. No television for public viewing of athletic events. Inside it is quiet! No music! WOW! Take time and walk over to the local library and walk all through town for sight seeing. This town is worthy to be taken seriously even though it is where more affluent people live so take a few photographs. If you want to see what the affluent segment of this country does with its money for providing shopping opportunities, schools and the like for its residents then you should visit this town and this bookstore. I am not sure that a book store like this one could survive in a less affluent town. Certain elements provide it with advantages not found elsewhere. I believe that the local library, schools and the academy do something to keep this bookstore afloat. I recommend it for your pleasure. If you want to see what might be missing or absent from your home town day after day then visit this place. Young people are exposed here to many different things that do not get the attention that they need in less affluent towns. Do not make the mistake and think that this store is an antique shop for collectors of memorabilia. There is some substance here worthy of your time in pursuing interests. The book store is a small place for talking people who like books. I found that there is a certain intellectual atmosphere here worthy of my time. Go there and enjoy!
Being that The Learned Owl Book Shop is in the very charming town of Hudson, Ohio it's not surprising to see that same charm shine from the book store. We were there for a special book signing by one of our favorite authors and the staff could not have been more friendly and accommodating. We enjoyed the visit very much
A rare find of a small independent bookstore, with lots of rooms and nooks and crannies to explore. The Learned Owl is on Hudson's main street in a quaint shopping area that is well worth the trip. Lots of small town businesses mixed in with a few national retailers, restaurants and more overlooking Hudson's scenic village green and clock tower. Don't miss it.
