This is a great memorial. Make sure to take the elevator to the top if you get the chance, it offers great views of the island and Lake Erie!
excellent presentation of this historic area. Very clean, very family oriented. Many facts presented that we were not aware of.Go to the top of the monument, very cool.
We enjoyed listening to the reenactment and going to the top of the memorial! You may not want to do this if you are afraid of heights.
My husband and I rode our bikes on the island, did alittle wine touring and made afew stops in shops and a cave and this memorial. The memorial is impressive to see out on the lawn. And inside there is a lot of information about the war that was fought with pictures and a mini scaled down "war seen" It was very interesting.
First off, yes, there is an elevator. Its a bit small so you may have to wait. The view is very impressive. If you are military, you can visit for free! Make sure you wave to Canada!
While the views from the top of the memorial are excellent in all directions over the flat Lake Erie Island landscape from 317ft (97m) above, do not miss the opportunity to see the visitor center which does a excellent job of telling the story of Oliver Hazard Perry’s decisive victory over the British in the Battle of Lake Erie during the War of 1812; how when his initial flagship became incapacitated, he transferred his command under fire, along with his soon to become famous flag reading “DONT GIVE UP THE SHIP”, to the other brig in his fleet and went on to victory. The memorial is dedicated to this victory and the lasting peace between the US, Canada and Britain that developed, and still flourishes, following the end of the war. Inside the base of the memorial, the six officers that perished in the battle have been reinterred and the ships engaged in the battle and their casualties are inscribed on the marble walls. From here, to get to the observation platform, one will need to climb 37 steps, buy a ticket for $3 (15 and under are free) and ride the elevator to the top. Located just east of downtown Put-In-Bay, there is no fee for entrance to the base of the memorial or the visitor center which also offers black powder demonstrations and Ranger and Junior Ranger programs. The visitor center and memorial are open daily from the middle of May through the weekend following Labor Day, 10am – 5pm, and then Friday through Sunday, 10am – 5pm, until early November when it closes for the season as access to the island by ferry becomes more limited and unpredictable as the cold, blustery Great Lakes weather arrives. Each year, on the weekend following Labor Day, Perry’s Victory is commemorated with expanded Ranger Programs, re-enactors and demonstrations, a parade through Put-In-Bay, a Toledo Orchestra performance, a Boy Scout Camporee and more.
I think I read somewhere that this is the highest observation tower on any monument in America? I could be wrong but either way it's a great view Put in Bay is great I highly suggest just taking it all in while you're there
beautiful monument, beautiful view, very interesting history lesson. would go back again next visit. well maintained, good employee knowledge of site.
We went to the Perry's Victory & International Peace Memorial. We got as far as the lawn in front and found that it is closed for rennovations. I guess it will be open next summer.
Wish it was open so we could get closer. They had it all gated off.Nice watching the guys fire their muskets!
Even if you don't love history, you will love to walk around outside and relax in the fresh air. The gift shop was fun to investigate and we found several gifts for the Grandkids. We found the history fascinating. Even WE turned out to be history buffs.
We traveled to Put-In-Bay specifically to visit the memorial. The visitor center is small but very well done and very informative. The views from the monument were spectacular. There is a small fee ($3) for going to the top via elevator. We visited while they were having a history weekend so there were people dressed up and doing various demonstrations on what life during the war of 1812 would have been like. There were also musket and cannon firing demonstrations. As a bonus the Toledo symphony performed an outdoor concert at the memorial on the Sat evening of our visit. I highly recommend choosing a weekend when there are some activities going on at the memorial to add to the visit. Also check the nps.gov website for opening hours. This monument is not open year round. We spent the weekend but the visit can also be easily done in a half day you just need to know the ferry schedule. The monument is a block or so from the Jet Express dock.
We visited on a great sunny day. The monument was closed for reno but still very pretty. The tourist center is super clean and has these neat little replicas of boats and the monument. There was also a pretty cool musket demonstration behind the center!
Unfortunately we couldn't go up the monument because it was being renovated, but the surrounding areas were clean and it is worth seeing on its own.
We really enjoyed the display and the overall atmosphere of the Memorial. I learned quite a bit about Perry and the battles for Lake Erie. Well worth stopping in for an hour or so.
