I go here at least 20 times a year it is a great place to just be with you family and enjoy the outdoors and enjoy life. Great places to cook and have an aming view great cabins and tons of places to camp and lots of hiking
If given the opportunity, rent cabin here over looking the lake. Beautiful scenery and comfy cabin. Beach is gorgeous, fishing is available as is boat rental.
The cabin we stayed in had a very strong odor! It smelled like mold and smoke even though it was a non smoking cabin! We went to buy air fresheners but the smell did not go away! Also on our last night my husband saw a mouse in the cabin! The sheets on the beds looked clean but the extra ones in closed definitely not!The little beach on the park side had a sign that said bacteria in the water were above state limit, so the kids couldn't go swimming! The only thing that was nice was the playground for the kids to play on!
Last year my friend went to cowan and I tagged along. Cowan has a lake to swim and fish in and they have a variety of boats to choose from. They had a park for the kids right across the cabin. It was a very safe environment.
Have been camping at Cowan for many years. Beautiful park and clean. Wooded campsites. Nice camper beach and commissary. Wilmington is close if you need to go for groceries or other supplies.
Campers beware! If you plan to stay in the cottages or cabins at Cowan Lake, you may think twice. We stayed in a cottage that was infested with bed bugs! My son has hundreds of bites all over his neck and face. Apparently they have had a bed bug problem for years, and they can't get it under control.
Cowan Lake is small but beautiful lake It is a clean lake that doesn't allow anything over 10 horse power boats. There is ample fishing, and they rent out a variety f boats for your pleasure. I am not rating this 5 stars because there isn't but 1 restaurant around there. Lots of camping and cabins in the area though.
Years ago we used to camp at Cowan Lake, and we do visit this wonderful Ohio parks several times a year.We often also visited the small restaurant near the lake and enjoyed the fare.More recently we "get our nature fix" at Caesar's Creek State Park.
You can't expect much from a state park that doesn't charge an entrance fee. We were there to spend a few hours kayaking in our own kayaks. The leaves were starting to change colors so it was pretty. We started paddling by the boat ramp near the lily pads, went around the island, and back through a path cut through the lily pads. Paddling by all the lily pads was fun but wear bug spray to keep mosquitoes away.
I stopped at Cowan Lake in my motorhome overnight. The night before I was at Barkcamp which was heavenly and only $20. Cowan is $27 for dirty bathrooms, mildewed shower curtains and clogged drains. The one good thing was the water was hot!
It really wasn't just ok, the gut at the boat rental, and bait shop should have told us of the spill and the fact that there were no fish in the lake at that time.
We stayed at Cowan Lake State Park at the end of June. It was a very hot weekend. It was pretty crowded even though it wasn't a holiday or anything like that. We stayed at campsite 116 it was called fully shaded on the reservation site but I would call it partially shaded. There was a bathroom directly across from our campsite which was nice, the ladies was ok, but my husband and sons said the men's was really bad. Our campsite was flat and easy to get into.I went on a couple of trails while there one was a bit overgrown but the other was pretty nice. We went to the marina to rent a boat for an hour but it was too expensive, so we passed. $106 for one hour with a small pontoon boat. $72 for a motor boat. Fishing banks are a premium since they're hard to get to any and most were very crowded. The beach was full of goose poo. The playground equiptment was dated but functional. There is a commissary that had lots of supplies if needed. The campsites provided zero privacy.
One of many great state parks in Ohio. Located just outside the quaint town of Wilmington, this is a perfect place to get away for a couple of daysWe got back late last night. We left then because the weather radar showed a line of storms moving in and it is no fun packing up a campsite and pop-up camper in the rain. The store/restaurantfriendly people, as with all state parks quality stuff for sale. They also had an ice cream and pizza shop. We did not try any pizza since four of the five employees quit their jobs a few hours before, but the aroma was great. There is a great outdoor seating on the backside over looking the lake through some woods. They sell most of the camping stuff to if you forgot to packThe campsitegreat place, well laid out. There are bathrooms, and water close to all sites. The showers are not as close, but easily accessible. The entire campground is wooded, but the majority of sites allow for awning. unfortunately, ours did not. the trees were too close to the asphalt parking pad - no big deal. The bathrooms are clean. Not elegant but clean. This is a green campground so you need to take care of your own trashThe lakeGreat lake. the boat ramp is easily accessible and not too steep. The one finger by the ramp has one end that is full of lily pads - pretty cool. Our beach was okay. It has a lot of little rocks and not as much sand, but easily walked upon. the parking is elevated so be prepared to walk up a hill. The lake is good size and is 10hp limit, perfect for us and our kayaks. We spend about six hours paddling around before we went in because the sunblock was wearing off. and we saw about 2/3 of the lake. There is also a little island in the lake. We did float for a bit and watched some sail boat races.Quick Factsbuy wood from the little house just outside the park entrance $5.00 bundle and it is always drybook in advance, the best sites go earlybe sure you have all the proper licenses etc. - the park is regularly patrolled by rangers.keep smartphone with you to check the weather radar, nothing worse that packing in the rainstore your food high or inside - a lot of raccoons, and they are not afraid of people
My son's family in Columbus, and my daughter's family in Cincinnati - this was a great place for a Day Fishing/Picnic Trip. If you want everyone to caught something (especially kids), this is the place to go. It has a beach area, camping area, cabins, marina, fishing, wild life. We got there just as the sun was coming up, and saw deer, hawks, cranes like birds, etc. The kids loved it and the big Water Lillies. We had a beautiful day with blue sky and lots of sail boats, row boats, and others on the Lake it was a very nice view. Where we were, there was no walking trail, but we walked along the Lake.
We love going to Cowan Lake SP for camping, the campgrounds have nice sites, with many of them having shady trees. This is an older park so it's not like camping in in some of the newer Parks that have had all the trees removed and lack imagination for making camping a more outdoorsy experience. The lake is also nice, limited power on the motor boats, a lot of people take their small sail boats, pontoons, to this lake. We take our kayaks, from the dock at the GIANT lily pads! There's also a store/commissary where you can buy snacks, food, ice cream, charcoal, ice, etc which makes it nice if you forgot the hot dog buns. Hiking is nice too. Too make of the camp sites allow dogs, I like dogs, but don't want them barking or staring at me when I'm eating. The beach is awful - the sand is very coarse and too make rocks. I guess you can't have it all in an Ohio State Park with the limited funding they get from the State.
