My parents are here, it is very peaceful, lots of old monuments, winding creek adds to a great atmosphere. Hope when its my time, I stay here!
Woodlawn is Toledo's edition of the "Rural Cemetery Movement" of the late 19th century. Well laid out with miles of curving roadways, ponds and a great collection of trees and shrubs. It is especially picturesque in the springtime when the flowering tress are in bloom; fall is another very colorful period. Pick up a copy of "Toledo's Woodlawn Cemetery" (Arcadia Publishing) at the office (or online) to learn about the burials and lives of the many prominent citizens interred here.
Take a lil day cation, and find Toledo pyramid... If you like old time gravesites, you'll enjoy this one just fine
it may seem strange to some that a cemetery can be beautiful and very interesting, it is also an arboretum and it is on the National Register of Historic Places. i have given many tours to our friends. being so old it has many styles of old grave stones. many mausoleums and obelisks, even a very large stone chair.the civil war area is a favorite of mine. many prominent families have been laid to rest here. lots of streets in toledo have been names after the "residents" of woodlawn. take a ride there and enjoy.
Don't let the other poster fool you. I was once a teenager. And I used to sneak in there at night all the time. Never vandalized. Never tried to raise the dead loo. We just went there to get away for a few hours andsmoke ccigarettes. That review was hilarious though. It is a beautiful place.
This is not your typical historical cemetery where you walk around tombstones and memorials and chapels (which are greatly made by the way). This is also an arboretum where you can enjoy all sort of trees while you walk around ponds or crossing bridges over the Ottawa River. Look for free guided tours where docents explain about the history of people buried here as well as the tress around the place.
This cemetery is dangerous. it is widely known for being haunted, and many young kids hang around especially at night. They vandalize the cemetery and conduct witchcraft and seances in the surrounding park. It is a very dangerous place to go which is unfortunate due to the fact that it is supposed to be a place to let those who have passed on rest in peace. It is anything but peaceful...
The family markers are kept in good shape. The roads are well maintained It is a relief that some of my wife's relatives who are their have such a nice quiet atmosphere to rest in.
The landscaping here is so wonderful...it's such a quiet beautiful place to visit on a not-so-great side of town. Some of the features of the cemetery are run down, like the old chapel. It's a shame that some benevolent philanthropist doesn't come along and donate the money to fix the place up! Woodlawn cemetery is one of Toledo's gems, in my opinion, and it deserves to be preserved.
Very interesting to wander through this old Toledo Cemetery! Large Monuments and Head Stones - even a special BABY (Infant) section. Love the bridge and meandering stream - this cemetery is very peaceful and calming.
I've been to Arlington, Evergreen and others, and this one wins for beauty of setting and monuments. Unbelievable that it's in the heart of Toledo bordering I75. I've taken pictures here during winter that boggle the mind. Unfortunate that it's in such a decaying area of Toledo, though decay has touched the cemetery rather lightly.
Great history of Toledo and people that built the city...beautiful park like surroundings.
Many of Toledo's founders are found here. It is very interesting just to drive through and read the names on the tomb stones. It is also a very pretty setting.
Well, it seems odd but this cemetery actually could be deemed an attraction. It holds the creme de la creme of Toledo's elite during it's historical heyday. It is especially beautiful in the spring when blooming.Genealogists (those tracing family roots) would probably be most fascinated.
They say you can't take it with you. Well many of Toledos wealthiest families have done a good job trying. Beautiful monuments in a peaceful setting. They have special walks around the grounds just go to their website.
