Went and were lucky enough to be able to see a live demonstration of a glass blower making a beautiful bowl. The museum is completely free and has amazing exhibits as well as architecture. A must see while visiting Toledo, OH!
It's hard to believe but everything in this amazing museum is free for all to enjoy! It is airy, bright and clean and it's obvious that great thought is given to how collections are displayed. The gift shop is definitely worth a visit as is the glass pavilion across the street where glass blowing can be observed. Check for concerts in the peristyle, what a treat . Might be a charge for these however. My very favorite spot in the museum is the cloisters. Sit down and let your imagination take you back several centuries while you enjoy the architecture and beautiful art!
Fantastic! Nice kids Art Area for the little ones and things to do for kids throughout the galleries also. The glass pavilion across the street was amazing. Wonderful glass blowing demo. Kids ages 12 and 7 both loved it here. FREE also
The Toledo Museum of Art is an internationally known art museum located in the Old West End neighborhood of Toledo, Ohio, United States. It houses a collection of more than 30,000 objects. The museum was founded by Toledo glassmaker Edward Drummond Libbey in 1901
My 86 year old mom and I went on a cold gloomy day. We had a nice cozy lunch and then walked around several sections of the museum. I enjoyed the plaza area where music was playing. I imagined it was during the time of Romeo and Juliet. It was beautiful.
Hard to believe a museum of this quality could exist in a mid-size Midwestern city. Excellent core collection of old masters. Separate glass museum with glassblowing demonstrations. Engaging special exhibits. Remarkable educational offerings, especially for kids.
Not as big as Cleveland's CMA but the TMA still represent local artists in an annual competition/show. The Glass Pavilion has frequent live glass blowing demonstrations and provides working space for local artists. This museum has invested BIG in geothermal and solar electric projects. It shares the building with Toledo's prime concert hall, the Peristyle, so you don't have to hike in the snow to hear the orchestra like you do in Cleveland at Severence Hall. Their café does a really good job for its size. My main criticism is that non-members have to pay for parking but less than in Cleveland. Cleveland's CMA has a huge atrium but I go for the art not the architecture.
The museum has something for everyone- from the "kinda interested" to the "art lover"!!Exhibits range from hands- on to eyes-only and have an appeal for any age and range of appreciation.
Easy access off I-75 and general admission is free thanks to the foresight of industrialist and philanthropist Edward Drummond Libbey and his wife Florence Scott Libbey. Special, traveling exhibits may have a fee. Special glass pavillion with live demos across the street from main building. Outdoor sculptures. Peristyle performance auditorium is a grand must-see. Cloister is a favorite part since childhood. All the big names in art represented, and in a museum that's not too massive. Nice cafe and gift shop too. Special evening events I haven't managed to attend but look so cool. Closed Mondays.
I loved all of the wonderful art peices this museum had! It was a very enlightening experience and made for a wonderful day!
It is not the biggest and it is not the best art museum ... BUT ... it is a beautiful building that is well maintained and has some wonderful surprises in the collections.Have gone on a regular basis over the years and always look forward to planning a visit for an hour or a day.You know what ? Admission is FreeNo way no how cah you find a museum of this quality at that price ANYWHERE I have beenGo !!!
We've known about the museum for years, but never visited until November. What a great surprise it held! The galleries and exhibits rivaled many of the "big city" museums we've visited, and were in love with the adjacent Glass Pavilion (take time to watch one of the glass blowing demos). Also, be sure to visit the gift shop. The prices and quality are very hard to beat!
Wandering the galleries of TMA is my favorite thing to do in Toledo. You can get lost for hours. Definitely recommend grabbing lunch in the cafe.
A classic setting for a major museum! Just the right size with major works, to enjoy and not overwhelm. View the glass collection and glass blowing across the street in the pavilion. See the attached Center for Visual Arts designed by Frank Gehry. Enjoy the Collector's Corner and the Community Gallery. Stroll the outdoor. sculpture garden...and it's all free! Then plan for a great lunch at the TMA Cafe'.Living in Toledo, the Museum is always a wonderful place to take guests!
The Docent program is there to help you find your way around the exhibits. They are very knowledgeable about the Arts. And the exhibits are always changing. Don't forget to visit the store and gift shop while you are there.
