This is an awesome place to kayak in Broken Bow, Oklahoma. The outfitter is very clean, welcoming, and well equipped for all water excursions. It is a beautiful and scenic. We did the Eight mile and five mile trips. There are several rapids that are definitely an experience for the adventurist. We loved it!
My wife and I recently spent a weekend in Beavers Bend State Park. We brought our own tandem kayak along in hopes of kayaking the beautiful Mountain Fork River. We found Wild Goose online through beavers bend's website and decided to give them a try. We called and booked a shuttle for the 5 mile trip they offer. Upon arrival at the beautiful and well kept property they are located on we were greeted by Greg, one of the owners, and one of his employee's. They promptly helped us unload and load our kayak on their trailer and talked with us about their history there and the trip we were about to go on. They informed us fully that the first three miles of the river were for the more adventurous and that it had rapids including a water fall called Presbyterian Falls. They suggested that the lower five mile trip would suit us better if we were looking for a more leisurely trip. They dropped us off at the put in point near the bridge up river and unloaded our equipment and kayak for us. The five mile trip was fantastic! They even gave us a heads up on certain parts of the river to avoid. They told us to go right when the river split after the big tree root wad which was very helpful. There was absolutely no surprises on the trip and everything went as expected. It was a gorgeous day and the water felt great. Upon arrival back at their shop located down stream (the trip took us two hours) They helped us load our kayak back up on our jeep and offered us a tour of their camping facilities they offer there. During conversation with Greg the owner he learned that we were camping at Beavers Bend and were not able to find affordable firewood in the area. He then offered us FREE firewood from his personal stash so that we could stay warm that night while camping. Talk about a friendly guy. Thanks Greg for being so friendly! Overall I wish I could give these folks more than 5 stars. I have rented kayaks from at least four different kayak rental places in my life and none of them compared to the cleanliness, friendliness, and overall affordability of these folks at Wild Goose. You won't be sorry if you use them.
Chris, We are sorry you and your family had a bad experience. We try to explain the trips as well as possible on our website www.wildgoosecanoe.com and all of our brochures distributed in the area, as well as on the phone when booking your trip. It is difficult to gage the experience level of customers over the phone. It is apparent we did not do a good job on matching your family with the correct trip and for that we apologize. We run hundreds of canoes on the 8 mile trip yearly. Many are first time canoers, including Scout and Church groups. None of the outfitters provide helmets. What you saw was a group of kayakers doing their annual training class. They were outfitted with helmets, ropes, and other gear for their class. Thank you for your input. We will keep it in mind when booking others in the future, and hope to see you and your family again. Maybe for the 5 mile trip!
First off, you must do the river. Our family of four took two Kayaks on the 8 mile trip and LOVED it. Although we hadn't done it before, the rapids were fantastic. Challenging and a bit scary, but totally worth it. The rest of the trip was very peaceful and calm. We went on a week day, so we had very little traffic on the river. I hear it can be brutal on weekends. We also did the 9am trip, and enjoyed the cooler start time.Wild Goose is in the middle of nowhere. Seriously, it was 40 minutes from our cabin. I'm not sure I'd use them again for that reason, but otherwise, it was good.
We had a pleasant experience with the host from the time we arrived until the time we returned at the landing. We were a family of five and chose the kayaks. We took an ice chest full of water, but did not take anything to eat. The river is relatively slow flowing, so it takes longer to make the 5 mile trip than we expected. Highly recommend taking food on the trip. There are three or four gravel beds on the river were you can pull your canoe or kayak out and have a picnic lunch. At one point the river changed the way it looked with dead trees in the river and large stumps. We began to wonder if we had passed the landing. When you see this area you still have about 45 minutes to go. There is a sign on the right bank of the river one half-mile from your final destination. After traveling the river once, I would recommend taking the 10 o'clock group instead of the 12 o'clock group, so you have plenty of time... And then take your time, enjoy a picnic on the riverbank... Overall, a professionally well-run outfit.
We rented a canoe and did the 8 mile trip and had a blast! We made reservations a couple weeks in advance, when we got there they had the canoes for our group loaded up and ready to go at 9. The staff were friendly and helpful. We will definitely be using them next time!
This is the only outfitter we have used for the last 5-6 years. They have always provided excellent service and ave gone out of their way to get us in the river ahead of the big crowds! You cannot go wrong with Wild Goose!
We selected Wild Goose for our day of kayaking the river based upon the reviews and are very happy that we did. There are many places that offer a similar service, but one of the reasons Wild Goose is the best choice is because their outfit is actually on the river so you go to their place, get signed in, pay, etc. and then they drive you up the river and drop you and your kayak or canoe in at that point (we did the 5 mile route) and you spend the day making your way back to their place - they just ask that you are back by 6pm. Subject to the weather of course, they have a few different options for what time you want to launch. We did 10:30am which put us in the water around 11am by the time they got all of us and the gear to the river. We took our time on the river - pulled off to the side numerous times to just hang out, play in the water, eat lunch, etc. We were so enjoying ourselves that we took a little over 4 hours. Along the way we noticed that those with other canoeing outfits had designated spots where they were to stop on the riverbank and wait for all those in their group to make it to the stop and then wait to be picked up and driven back to the outfits location to get back to their cars. There are signs on the river when you are nearing the Wild Goose location and when you get there, you pull up to the riverbank, get out and hand them your life jackets, say thank you and head to your car - very nice set up. And they have tandem kayaks which were new to us, but we gave it a try and really liked it - we were able to be together, but easier to manage than a canoe, lighter and has a seatback for each of us rather than none in a canoe. We were 2 adults but it would be good for 1 adult and a kid too. I spoke to Greg when I called to inquire about setting up the trip and he was very helpful in providing suggestions and information.
Nice kayak trip, took the lower end of river, first time kayaking. Greg and Darla were great to deal with. You leave your car and get shuttled to drop off point, then take river back to their ramp. Would for sure use Wild Goose if ever in area again.
Five mile kayak on lower end at 12:00 am on May 23, 2014 was very enjoyable and relaxing. Generally calm but flowing stream where you can sit back and enjoy the scenery. I'm in moderate shape and did not have to work to much rowing at all. Fifty to one hundred feet across with both banks lined with trees, including cypress. Lot's of turtles sunning themselves. Got started a little late, due to earlier reservations showing up late. Recommend lots of suntan lotion and a few dips in the water when it gets hotter out. However, I would highly recommend this trip in moderate temperatures, if you are looking to relax, get a little exercise and see some new sights. Fun for young and old. Young and old married on our trip in one and two man kayaks, which were very easy to control and have a paddle on both ends, verse the canoe paddles, which have a paddle on one end.
We had a kayak trip booked at 1:30 on a Friday on the calmer "lower five miles" portion of the river. The weather looked iffy with a line of large thunder storms approaching. we watch wether map with the staff, it looked bad. They offered a rebooking Saturday morning at 10:30. It went wonderfully! beautiful weather, nice river suitable for any level, courteous and professional staff. Actual river time was a little less than two hours. A great trip on a beautiful river. We plan to try the faster and somewhat more thrilling upper three miles next time.
Arrived without a reservation, not what I would recommend, but we got lucky. I liked parking my car where we get out and they take you upstream. Very friendly staff and owners are there working along side them, liked seeing that. Great gear, mad river, all you will need or want. Bring a cooler it got a little warm, July and all. Our church uses this group and I will use them again. Off the beaten path, however you don't get all the rif raf from all other float companies.
Not knowing any outfitters in the area we chose Wild Goose from a guide book. From the start the owner talked to me about our skill level and what we wanted from our experience, then she made recommendations. Trusting her experience and knowledge was a great decision. She recommended a tandem kayak, not the canoe as we originally thought we wanted, and the 8 mile trip. It was wonderful! The first 3 miles were the most exciting, with some easy rapids and beautiful scenery. The next 5 miles were beautiful and relaxing with occasional faster moving water. It was a terrific experience that has given a taste for more! Their location may seem out of the way, but once your finished with your trip your car is right there for you to just load up and head home. No waiting around. It was perfect. Thanks for the information and experience Wild Goose!
We rented two canoes for myself , spouse, daughter and her boyfriend and my grandog. Everyone at Wild Goose was very nice and the trip turned out great. Wild Goose is a little way off the road but worth it. You leave your car at the take out spot and they shuttle you to the start. Great river and reall nice people. Can't wait to do it again and it will be with Wild Goose.
