Just got back from beach in Nuevo Vallarta. The waiters were all on Segways! and having fun.The owners/managers of Segway in Jacksonville, OR are amazingly helpful and give great tours! I'm hoping they will make them with a side car soon! smiles,......
Jacksonville is a nice small town with wineries and the Britt music festival. We've meant to visit there between plays at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival -- our real destination -- but always have just driven through town on the way somewhere else. This year our local Ashland friends decided that they and four of us visitors should actually go to Jacksonville, and they picked this Segway tour as the way to introduce us to the town. The Ashlanders had gone with us in San Francisco on an excellent Segway Tour of Fisherman's Wharf and Segway of Jacksonville would be an interesting comparison. Indeed, the tour was very fun.The people at Segway of Jacksonville are friendly folks, solid trainers, and encouraging to those of us who were initially uneasy riders. The machines are in top condition, too.In San Francisco we all had earphones to hear the tour leader's commentary as we went along trafficked city roads. Jacksonville is so much lower key! No microphones on the guide, and no earphones on the riders. There's barely any traffic in town, and the route is quiet. We stopped frequently for information on the local history, dismounting and peering into windows, doorways, or simply scuffing along the grass of a city landmark. We heard a lot about early Jacksonville (maybe too much... at times some of the landmark events related didn't feel particularly momentous) and drove along many scenic streets. The pace was leisurely and appropriate for the easy feeling of the town. Our guide was responsive, and I particularly enjoyed the time he gave us in a empty parking lot. Our group circled around, doing laps, Segway chariots racing. Of course, I also liked roaming the local cemetery on the Segways, but maybe my enjoyment of that venue says too much about me!Our groups consensus tips are:1) Go early in the day, if the weather is warm. You're outdoors without protection from the sun which would have been a problem later in the day.2) Ask for more driving and less stopping. Being on the Segway beasts themselves was a highlight and we weren't sophisticated enough to appreciate some of the details of Jacksonville history we were stopping and seeing. In retrospect, we should have confessed to being luddites interested in only the historical highlights and wanting more road time. But, make no mistake. The experience we had was excellent!
This was a spur of the moment idea we had while visiting Southern Oregon. The company was gracious to take us as walk up additions to the daily tour. David and Brandon were excellent at providing a 30 min training before we got started and they made sure to put the Segways at lower speeds until we were comfortable. Once we were off, the entire 2 hour ride was so much fun, full of great historical facts and an insider view of Jacksonville, a prominent gold mining Oregon town. It was a hot day, so they made sure we had plenty of cold water. We appreciated that Brandon never rushed us along the trip, happily answered any questions, had a good sense of humor, and provided detailed knowledge of the town's history. We would highly recommend this adventure as a fun and different way to see what some would say is another small town in Oregon (but clearly is so much more!).
The owner of Segway of Jacksonville graciously donated segways for use during the Ashland Independent Film Festival. I have to admit, as a mountain biker, I always thought of these as being kind of corny. After going through the training and actually riding one, I must confess, I couldn't wait to get on it again. They are so much fun and highly recommend you give it a try as you'll be pleasantly surprised. Thank you Mr. David Works for all you do for our community and providing our visitors with such an amazing adventure!
My husband and I had the time of our life touring historic Jacksonville. David was extremely knowledgeable and friendly. This was the highlight of our entire weeklong vacation
Our teenage grandson and niece had a great time! We are planning on the whole family doing this over the holidays. They give lessons before starting the tour to make sure everyone is a skilled driver. Absolutely would do this again and wish I had my own Segway at home :)
Don't worry that you won't be able to ride one of these. You'll get lots of instruction and practice before heading out. This was money well spent. Learned a great deal about the area and saw more than we could have on foot. I would definitely do this again.
Fun !!!!! They provide you with a thorough preview and training session, and then you are off on your own !!!!! They answered all questions, had you "run a course" to get familiar with the machines, and gave you maps and directions (although Jacksonville is small enough it would be difficult to get "lost.) The price is very reasonable. I felt safe and comfortable when I left the property, in control of my Segway - I had a blast and I'd do it again.
This our first time operating a Segway. We received about 30 minutes of instruction and were off like pros. The tour was well planned and gave us a lot of history of Jacksonville. Our tour guide Betty is from Jacksonville and clearly knew a lot about the town. The tour included stories about downtown buildings, the Britt festival grounds and the historic cemetery. The total time was 2.5 hours including the instructions.
Jacksonville is such an amazing place for the size of the town. I would encourage travelers to spend at least a few days getting to know the area. The Segway tour I spent time with had a very knowledgeable lady, who pointed out many buildings with history. The story that stood out to me was about a gun-fight that took place during early gold-rush days, and right on that spot is an old brick wall that to this day has bullets from that fight. Stories of Indians and cowboys... many old buildings that bring the past to life. Don't think you are finished after your Segway tour!! Now its time to head up to the most amazing Cemetery EVER!! In Early October the cemetery comes to life with actors dressed in the clothing of the period, standing on the graves of those pioneers telling the stories... its so amazing!! But no matter what the season, Christmas or July, this little town is a destination, with concerts in the Summer or beautiful Christmas decorations and shopping in the Winter... Check it out!! :) Don't forget to try some of the best coffee in the coffee shop with original wood-plank floors and many paintings and Antiques! Delightful!!!
I have been on this tour twice before with my husband, but when my daughter and I were in Ashland recently I had to take her there. She wasn't too sure about this at the beginning but she had the best time! There is instruction time before the actual tour starts so you know how to go fast/slow, stop, turn, back up, park, etc. Before you leave the driveway you already know a lot about how to work with the Segway. The tour is a lot of fun. The entire town of Jacksonville is a historic landmark. Many buildings have been restored, several have been rebuilt in historic style. Lots of interesting things to learn about the town and Oregon in general. There are plenty of stops along the way to get off and look around. And it's fun to wave at all the pedestrians taking pictures of you!If you have previous experience with a Segway and want to tour the town by yourself, it is possible to rent a Segway by the hour.
Great way to see Jacksonville. Our guide was a wealth of information about the historic areas of the city.
Had a great time doing a historical tour with friends and a guide. Very, ver well worth the time. One of the top things to do in Jacksonville, OR - the segways were a blast!
Fun historic tour of Jacksonville, OR and the surrounding area. Excellent, easy and safe Segway instruction. Having visited the Britt Classical Festival and southern Oregon every summer for the last 25 years, I still learned a lot of interesting and fun facts about Jacksonville/regional history, the Gold Rush, and local color (including the real Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid). Great views of town and the valley from the historic gold rush era cemetary on the hill.
We did the historical tour of Jacksonville on Segways. It was so much fun that I ended up purchasing a Segway. Even if you don't get hooked on it like I did, you'll find that riding a Segway is both easy and fun, and you'll get a good lesson about Oregon's history. Highly recommended!
