I liked a number of their red wines but turns out the better (at least for a fan of big red wines like me) were made from California grapes. Staff was friendly and their "guard dogs" impressive! Tasting room is somewhat small but there were few of us to crowd it.
The first time I went into the Spangler tasting room, I was hosted by Pat Spangler, the owner and winemaker himself, and I've subsequently become friends with his wonderful wife Loree as well. I like Big Hairy Red Wines and believe me Pat make them. They have a cool gift shop as well. Easy access off I-5 at one of the Roseburg interchanges. Stop often and join the wine club!
This was our 15th Oregon winery visit and we are red wine only drinkers so we tasted the reds. Nice but still a bit on the light side for us so we paid the $5.00 tasting fee but did not take anything home. The greeters were wonderful friendly warm and fuzzy Akita's and they made the stop totally worthwhile. Hubby could hardly tear himself away from them to drink his wine. The winery is a short drive off the highway, the tasting room is nice, the staff are friendly and the wine is good, just not our taste.
Their wines are good (especially their cab franc)However, when we recently visited their tasting room, we had a terrible experience. When I opened the door to enter the tasting room, I was "greeted" by a large Akita who growled and lunged at me. Luckily I was able to slam the door quickly and avoided getting bitten. when I mentioned that it probably isn't a good idea to keep a known aggressive breed at a public place, I was told by the owner that I didn't know what I was talking about... It went downhill from there... basically we felt unwelcome. We left without tasting wine or spending money. First off, we used to be wine club members, we bought a half a case in Feb 14, at a tasting event, and was looking forward to buying more and were going to renew are membership. their wines are good. However, given our experience with the owner and his dogs we won't be back and won't spend money there in the future. There are a lot of other great wines in the Umpqua that are just as good ones without the aggressive dogs.
The best wine was the Southern Oregon Cabernet. I was disappointed with the other selections. It Might be my taste but I preferred the wines at Abacela which is just down the road.
Warning there are some dogs when you first walk in. Don't be alarmed though! They are sweet and well maintained. They greet you and then go lay in the corner. They know their role :) The owner was fantastic to say the least. He knew his wines and you could tell he loves his job. All of his wines were delicious so it was hard to choose. Don't forget to taste the sparking almond before you leave. Such a treat!
This is a small winery that has some fantastic wine. The winery is difficult to find as it is really out of sight. Once you get there you will love its spectacular placement in this small valley.
We love the BIG BOLD red wines , we stopped by Spangler for a tasting , we are so glad we did ! Super super wines !We are lucky we've been to most the great wine tasting areas of the world and we think Spangler is right there with the best!If you love big reds , stop in , the tastings Evan free!PS , the tasting room Mgr is very knowledgable about the vino, very nice man !Thanks , We will be back ,Mike
Reds were pretty decent, in particular his Claret, very smooth! The three dogs inside the tasting room were friendly....great looking dogs. Their pours are a bit short from the norm. The lady at the counter blew our minds when she told us she was "70" she looks fantastic for her age not to mention her personality is so much FUN! For the not so great aspect of Spangler:The owner must of fallen asleep in his 101 public relations class ...he is hardly personable at the contrary he is cold & very uninviting :( its a real shame!
Come on ...being hospitable is an integral part of ANY business, more so in the wine industry. This owner does not connect with his customers on any level, he has no idea the importance of taking the basic steps to have his customers feel welcomed. If it had not been for the mature friendly short black hair lady we would have shortened our visit! She was not ONLY personable & engaging she was the reason we stuck around. Super sweet!!!Will not deny he makes decent reds, his Claret was really nice as well as his Syrah. Congrat's on your winemaking capabilities...closing the gap on your disconnect with your "potential" customers is crucial. Abacela winery recommended Spangler's reds ...I hope the owner opens his eyes to the other negative reviews as well and takes it all in as constructive criticism. Perhaps he does not realize a winery is a place to ENJOY, leave the sterile personality for office matters. A simple "welcome" does wonders! Verdict:Good reds (4 stars) however the overall ambiance falls short giving this winery an overall rating of 3 stars.
I was able to visit this winery with a good friend of mine who happens to be one of their wine club members. It is off the beaten path but very worth the effort to visit.Being a person that favors red wine, I decided to focus on tasting the reds. As I progressed through the tastings, I found myself marking positive points on ALL the wines presented. From the very reasonably priced "Red Table Wine" all the way up to their "2006 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon". I ended up choosing a bottle of their 2008 Reserve Merlot to take home and share with my wife. A very rich Merlot with a black cherry, dark cocoa and a bit of a spicy finish with a hint of vanilla. MMMMMM! :-)I was able to meet Pat and Loree Spangler and found them to be VERY passionate about making wine and sharing it with others. Pat invited my friend and I back behind the scenes and let us barrel taste a few of their new wines they are working on. It was a joy seeing Pat's eyes sparkle as he explained what was happening at different stages of the process.I will be returning with wife in tow to share with her the wonderful wines of Spangler!
