Some years ago I was riding a long distance motorcycle event called the Oregon 500, now the Rose City 500. One place was a stop near Madras, OR where one could pull off and see seven or so of the volcanos that make up a 210 mile section of the Cascades. We were driving on US 97 between Biggs Junction and Madras the other day, enjoying the 94 miles stretch of "no services" when we came upon this spot again. The Shaniko Mountain Finder is a roadside pullout with room for about 10 vehicles, no danger of exceeding that on many days out there! It seems to be a locally created informational exhibit that helps you locate about seven large volcanos to the West on clear days, and in this part of Oregon many days are bright blue. Truly amazing. On a good day you can see well into Washington to the North and down to well South of the Sisters. Snow covered and beautiful. Nice place just to look, stretch, hear the birds, watch the hawks, look for an Eagle and marvel that there is such a place. And not messed up with any tacky tourist stuff!
