I realize the wildlife refuge did not provide our beautiful sunny day but in was a great place to go and spend our beautiful day. Very nice hiking trail out and back among the spring ponds filled with ducks and geese. But the highlight is a pair of nesting bald eagles. Did not spot on this visit but should be egg time very soon and hopefully have the fourth year's young to watch being raised and taught eagle skills.
All sorts of wildlife. Deer, LOTS of water fowl. Bald Eagles nesting. Nice level waking trails. Very good interpretative center. Ample parking.
It's in our backyard practically. We are so lucky to have a place that is in the city but so serene.the Eagles are fun to watch in their nests. The only thing we wish, is if we could take our dog. But totally understand why they are not allowed.
A beautiful, well preserved area - with a park, hiking and walking trails, a river, fields, forest, picnic spots, etc. A great area for respite from the hustle and bustle of the new age!
Asa commuter and area resident, I'd driven past the entrance to the Tualatin River National Wildlife Refuge many times and thought to visit "someday", but didn't set time aside for that until early last year. I've since returned many times, camera in hand, to appreciate the quiet trails and wildlife photo opportunities. For birdwatchers, it provides an opportunity to sit quietly with binoculars, spotting scope or camera. Many area residents have discovered it, and use the trails for "power walks" and exercise, so photo ops may be confounded by others who disturb the creatures you are trying to observe or capture with your lens. I would recommend visiting in early morning or dusk at any time of year. The refuge provides a seasonal haven for migrating ducks and geese, and a nesting site for many species of birds. I have seen and photographed deer, harmless reptiles and amphibians, and a healthy variety of birds here. There are restrooms, and there's a visitor center. If you enjoy a quiet morning stroll in a peaceful environment or a place to sort out your decisions with only natural distractions, I would recommend the Tualatin River NWR.
First of all the weather couldn't have been more delightful, seven days of mostly sunny and mid 70's. The wildlife refuge is a must see for outdoor enthusiasts, many displays and natural settings. While we were there a pair of American Eagles were sitting watch over their newest offspring. Two spotting telescopes were set up in the souvenir shop and had been focused to observe the parent and fledgling on their nest from a safe distance. Quite a treat.
We were looking for a nice sunny nature walk, and so we decided to explore the wildlife refuge. It was immediately clear what an excellent place it is for viewing birds; even in the parking lot, we saw kestrels. The Bald Eaglet was perched on the edge of his nest waiting for mom to bring him something fresh, we saw egrets and herons - I wished I'd brought binoculars. The nice level paths let you slowdown and study ponds full of tadpoles, Rock Creek, and the banks of the Tualatin River. It winds through woodlands, meadows, and lets you gaze over wide wetlands (whose wetness varies by the seasons). Very cool place. Not for runners, or dog-walkers, however: both are forbidden, so as not to disturb the critters the sanctuary exists for. Which is why I thought the planners' choices so very odd of paving all paths and roadways with annoyingly loud gravel (hard to hear bird song over the crunch crunch), and big ugly aluminum bridges that creak and clang when walked on, with side rails so thick and high you can't view the creek you're crossing. Everything else, benches, raised walkways, etc., seemed carefully chosen to be attractive and blend in with the scenery, which was wonderful.
The wildlife refuge is one of many things I love about living in Sherwood. There are beautiful nature walks with great opportunities for bird viewing within minutes of town.
This refuge is located between Tualatin and Sherwood on Pacific Hwy. The visitor center is new and has great exhibits. While the refuge is great to walk around any time of year, the best time of year is during the winter for the bird migrations. There is no fee at this time so come on out, take a walk and bring your binoculars. This summer while I was there we saw a fledgling bald eagle sitting in its nest.
It's a beautiful spot to take a walk. There's lots of wildlife to see and if you go into the center they have telescopes set up for your viewing pleasure. They also have a nice variety of information and gifts.
This delightful wildlife refuge is located on land that was previously a dairy. It has a lovely visitor center with well-composed, educational exhibits and informed volunteers. We walked the paths and spotted Western Bluebirds, mallards, and bald eagles. It is a peaceful and beautiful place.
Paths are well marked, Observation points are good. Wildlife is unconcerned about your presence. Gift shop and exhibits are adequate. Spotting scopes are helpful.
