Wife and I ran a half marathon in this area and loved the views. The soft red dirt was a wonderful surface to run and the many train tunnels made the run more interesting.
The Hoover Dam pools up the river to form Lake Mead which is a fully recreational area for boating and other activities.
We stayed at Boulder Beach campground in a 31' motorhome for a week. It was a nice spot. Our site had a beautiful view of Lake Mead. The site was a good size where there was ample room for our RV and our little tow vehicle. No hookups, but there is a dump station and rest rooms--no showers. We had a large, concrete picnic table, fire ring, and trees and bushes that attracted ravens, butterflies and hummingbirds. There are walking and biking trails...in fact, we rode our bikes along the rail trail to the Hoover Dam--a beautiful but challenging ride up the little mountain and through 5 tunnels. The lake has a beach, boat tours, boat rentals, a marina (with a little restaurant and shop). The Lake Mead recreation area is large with lots of scenic spots to view the lake. Las Vegas is a short car drive away-about 30 miles-we went there twice. Enjoyed our stay.
Boulder Beach is a nice campground with clean facilities and some good bike riding. Take a ride over to the Las Vegas marina - about a mile away - and take the boat ride over to Hoover Dam. Awesome.
You pay 10 dollars to enter the recreational area and another 10 per night for the camp ground. It is well kept, I'll give them that.Maybe I'm just really cheap but I was expecting it to be free based on the reviews.Anyway for 20$ in total for us we didn't have showers, it was self check in, no electricity and firewood normally has to be bought as they do a decent job of picking up most of the firewood. The campground is a 20 minute walk from lake mead.
We stayed here overnight as we were just passing through the area. All the loops on the right as you enter the campground were closed off (these are the ones with the nice level concrete pads). Not sure why, didn't look like they were being worked on. We did find a nice, relatively level site on the outer edge of the campground. The spots are close together and there isn't much vegetation to separate you from your neighbor, but we had nice quiet neighbors so it didn't really matter much. Rangers patrolled through the campground regularly. Bathrooms are small, but clean.
Stop for a while to cool off. Find a shady spot (hard to come by) and relax for a while. There are some nice boats in the marina too!
We ended up arriving at Boulder Beach a day early due to the snow at the Grand Canyon. It a first come first served camp site and at $10 a night we were surprised at the quality and location. The first few loops had been recently renovated with super flat concrete pitches but not spoilt as surrounded with plants. Toilets were clean, water was spread around the camp, dump station was easy to use. The views were amazing, we did lots of hikes and could even hike to the Hoover Dam from here. Would definitely recommend this campsite and the weather was superb.
Very friendly staff helped as as first time trailer campers. Great views, fire pits, bar b q at each site. Well maintained and friendly folks all around... Great experience, nice hikes, moon over lake at night.....Nirvana!
