Always wanted to come here. I saw a ufo in 1998 and ever since was interested in seeing this place. The mailbox is no longer there.
Born in the '60s and going through all the Cold war era and secrets, secrets, secrets, Area51 is one of those places that has always held a mystique for me. On our way from Rachel to Utah we detoured down Groom Road to the back gate. About 13 miles of dirt (rocky) road brought us to the signs and the SUV with the ("here's another numpty tourist car") security guards watching. We stayed long enough to get a few pics and then another 13 miles back to the highway. If you can, make the detour however a word of caution, our rental car was Black but by the time we got back to the freeway it was mostly white covered with dust (ie filthy) and we had plenty of bangs and thumps of rocks hitting the bottom of the car so be prepared for this.
My husband LOVES Area 51 so we HAD to go there while on vacation in Las Vegas. It was about a 2 1/2 hour drive from Vegas with really nice scenery. When we got to Groom Lake Road, I found out it's a very rough dirt road. The road is 13 miles long and is extremely bumpy. We were in a really good rental car and it was still horribly bumpy. If you look past the bumpiness, there's beautiful scenery out there. When we got to Area 51 - there were the Camo Dudes waiting for us. You can take as many pictures as you want, you just can't go past the signs. Then it was another 13 miles back on the same bumpy dirt road. I don't care to go back, but I know my husband will!
It is just a mail box! Supposedly secret messages are dropped off and picked up. There is no sign telling you where to go but if you go to the Little Alien Inn they have a map or will just tell you where it is. If you go there via Las Vegas go back the same way. It takes 3-4 hours more to go through Tonopah.
We hired a car and drove from Las Vegas, it's around a 2 hour drive. Pleasant drive too, vast open space of the dessert, feels like you are the only people on earth. We arrived at the beginning of groom lake rd, at around 16.30, and saw the white bus heading down the dirt track away from Area 51. It's the longest rd I've ever seen, and amazing watching the dust trails from the bus. I think the rd is 13 miles long. We drove to the entrance of Area 51, cammo dudes were to the right of us, on a hill, watching our every move.. Yeah it felt intimidating and my husband refused to get out of the car! I wanted a photo of the surrounding area, and of the entrance sign ( which I took from the car) but didn't hang around long. We turned straight back around and headed back. We stopped further down the rd, waited for the dust to settle before getting out of the car. At the beginning of the rd, we saw what looked like a white vehicle, so we pulled over and waited for it to drive past us, incase it was the white bus again, but it was a lorry heading towards the entrance of Area 51??...Very eery and exciting all the same, I'm glad we did it. We stayed in Rachel - the little alieinn, loved the experience and would do it again if I'm ever that side of the world.
Stayed at the Bellagio and they booked me on a trip out to Area51 I had to do it, it made my trip it's a long drive out there well over two hours.I got all the photos that you would expect including the black(white) mail box the highlight of the trip walking up the hill and gone police vans flashing their lights and telling us to move awayA great trip out
We drove over 2 1/2 hours out of Las Vegas to see Area 51. Absolutely nothing to see except desert & sand & mountains until you get to a big barnlike building with souvenirs to sell. Another 40 minutes down the road a small diner with more trinkets to sell and a bad burger. Not sure what we expected but not this!
This little town 2 1/2 hours north of las Vegas has very little but the drive and the quaintness of it is priceless ( especially on a Motorcycle ( your own or if you rent one)take the I -15 north to the Ely ( rt 93 north turnoff) into Lincoln county thru Alamo(fuel here and in ash springs I would get some if on bike)SLOW DOWN IN ASH SPRINGS THEY RUN SPEED TRAP SOMETIMEStake left by roadside Jerky stand to 375 ( Extratrestrial HWY)stay to left rt fork is 318 to Lund and back way to ElyAfter you go over mountian summit on left you will see a long Dirt Road this is road to Groom Lake AKA Dreamland or area 51 ( where many speculate the stealth Bomber and Fighter were tested in late 80's early 90's) you can only go about a half mile til you hit gate that tells you that you are tresspassing.Staying on 375 about 20 more miles will bring you into Rachel where you can get food and drink at the Little Aleinnhttp://littlealeinn.com/and buy area 51 souvieners and hear all the storiesyou can stay at the motel there or make it a day tripalso except AF Land all the land around is BLM ( public lands ) so you can pitch a tent anywhere as long as you leave it as you found it ( pack in Pack out)you can return the way you came or continue up 375 to RT 6 to tonapah ( casino/ hotel there)and take the 95 south back to Vegas and circle the entire area51( remember in summer its HOT 110+ it is a desert after all)
Stopped in Rachel and had lunch at the Little Aleinn . Short trip back to the Black (now White) mail box. Followed the directions past but somebody removed a stop sign at the intersection when you are supposed to turn right to proceed to the entrance to the base. we travled down a wrong road for about 2 miles and all of a sudden in the distance I see a dust cloud coming towards us at a high rate of speed. We hightailed it back to the turn we were supposed to make and were flying down the dirt road and the cammo dude caught up to us really quickly from the wrong turn off. He pulled along side for a minute checked us out and the sped off. we were already flynig pretty fast so i can even imagine how fast he was moving. We slowed down and when we got to the border markers he was just waiting for us on a hill overlooking. It was a little scary at first because I wasnt sure if we crossed any borders on the wrong road as they really dont mark the boundaries well. They will arrest you just for crossing a few feet and slap you with a fine but luckily we just tweeked him a enough for him to come out of nowhere.
See my review for "Extraterrestial Highway" and the "Little Ale'inn" in rachel, NV. it's all pretty much the same tourist attraction.
Well, do not expect to see anything special - but just for the feeling of "I was there" is really super to visit. Cammo dudes observed us from the hill, we took couple of pictures, and you never knew :oD We enjoyed it a lot!
Once again, made it ti the very edge of this legendary military base, took a pic of the sign, but chickened out of getting out of the car for a look around, These cammo dudes are definitely intimidating... Next time, perhaps!
As the title says, just overcome your feat of the place and you will have a great time. There are real dangers so you must take the proper precautions though. That first time to spot a cammo dude, you will remember for a long time!Among other things make sure you have a lot of water, food, spare tire, warm clothes, camera. My suggested itinerary for a first visit (going from Vegas):Stop at Alamo,NV for fuel and to see the white bus that takes workers into Area 51(only on weekends).Stop at the Extra-terrestrial highway sign.Continue up the highway and turn onto the A51 back gate road. Then stop at Rachel, NV - a great town! Then finally to the A51 front gate.My video review:http://youtu.be/SYLbrQ4INSo
The base is hidden so don't plan on actually seeing much more than a dirt road, security guards, and a couple of signs posted telling you not to go past. It is about a 1 1/2 hour drive from Las Vegas and is fun to do. It is a very beautiful and uneventful drive. Take your camera up because the roads take you through some beautiful country. Try going up when the Red Flag Excercises are going on. You may be able to see some military aircraft in the area. I like to come up here each time I go to Vegas just to say I've been there and to see if anything has changed or if you can see some military action. Go to Rachel and visit the Lil Al E Inn bar. Good food and has a lot of stuff about the base in there to read. Again, not much of anything to see there either but still a quirky quick getaway from Las Vegas.
It's a great tour, where you stop at several interesting places, discovering some secrets of the "Area 51" mystery, Mc Carran Airport, Nellis Air force base, dry lake (Delmar), Extraterrestrial Highway, "Black Mailbox", entrance road to Area 51...Big thanks to Bob Mc Carter, our tour guide who made the trip really interesting and entertaining! (By the way Bob, there are 50 Mc Carters on Facebook, don't seem to find you :-) ).
