I attended an annual event that was held here. The ambiance was perfect. What a great place to hold an event. Huge stage and it was great that the bar was down stairs. It was cool and kind of spooky when the lights flickered. I would recommend having an event here again. We had the Virginia City Gun Fighters there and that was cool.
I really liked the tour we took of this opera house. Our volunteer guide was fantastic. He had lot's of great stories share. It was probably one of my favourite things we did in Virginia City.
Very informative guide. Tours are $3 per person. The building has a neat history but has been remodeled a fair bit. It is still an active theater and can be booked for private events like weddings. Interestingly, the school district owns the building and all the tour money and other profit goes to support the local schools.
We wanted to visit a true historic venue in Virginia City and decided on the Piper opera house. The place is truly a step back in time and we were surprised by the artists that had performed there such as Caruso and Houdini. It was nice to get a little off the beaten path and enjoy, in private, a really neat and interesting place.
What a thrill to actually be transported back in time to the era of the gold rush! The city is exceptionally well maintained and vibrant, with many people still inhabiting the upper apartments Of the storefronts and nearby homes. The saloons are still pouring drinks and live music is wafting out of the open doors. There are horse drawn carriage tours that show you all of the city and tell of the history, good and bad. I suggest this town as a "must see" for kids of all ages.
This is the 3rd rebuilt Pipers Opera House since the other two were destroyed, so it is still historic, but I would have loved to have seen the original. It is slowly being renovated back to it's glory days and hopefully will one day be fully restored. It was fascinating to hear about all the many famous people in history that have either performed there or were sitting in the audience. The price of admission to view the Opera house is very reasonable and one of the cool highlight places to see in Virginia City.
I have been to plays and weddings here. I love this place. It really takes you back to the old west at it's best!
You say you want to see a place from the Old West, I mean the Old West of the Comstock silver and gold mining era of the 1860s! It’s not Knotts-Berry-Farm or Universal-City “real”. VIRGINIA CITY is the real deal. There, in the mountains about 45 minutes away from RENO, are authentic streets with wooden buildings, saloons, (particularly fun with music, singing, dancing and drinking is The Bucket of Blood), museums, Piper’s Opera House (we even saw a wedding there), the Virginia and Truckee Railroad engine in the Comstock , the Mackay Mansion (built by George Hearst, father of Wm. Randolph Hearst), the St. Mary Louise Hospital, the Fourth Ward School, the Red Light District, the old Chinatown, the Storey County Jail - all in a magnificent mountain setting. You can taste and buy homemade fudge, eat a pizza at the Red Dog Saloon, or put a dollar in a Delta Saloon slot and take a look at the Suicide Table where lots of money was lost while gambling for high stakes. There are plenty of tourist shops and things to buy, but what is memorable is to walk around this place where history happened.
This was the place I got married at almost two weeks ago. I'll tell you this was the most perfect place And I was honored to be able to to use this venue. Toni was the person we had to contact to get things rolling and she was awesome! The building provided Elegance to my photos. Best building in Virginia City to use as a place to celebrate your special occasion.
It was incredibly large and amazingly restored. It has a lot of history. One of the better restored buildings in Virginia City. This opera house is used by the community for school functions, plays, graduations, music, dances and more. The school district actually absorbed this building into their control. It is a must see in town. It even has the oldest elevator in the west!
Again staying with the time travelling theme. All the Victorian/Steampunk costumes fit in so perfect with the decor of the large ballroom upstairs.
We've been traveling to Virginia City twice a year now for awhile and EVERY TIME we go it's closed! :(
I visited here during my recent trip to Virginia City. I wanted to see the opera house due to all the history here and I enjoy seeing theaters. I would have liked to see a show here, but the weekend I was here, there were no shows available. When I arrived in the mid afternoon, a tour was just starting so I joined in for $5.00. The tour takes about 30 minutes. Our tour guide did a good job showing us the theater and giving the history and events that took place here. I expected the theater to be more beautiful inside than it was. There were chairs piled up as it had been used for a wedding. I found the interior to be okay but it did not wow me at all. The outside of the building is also not that interesting. If you have the time, I would suggest a visit to this historical and important building, but it was not one of my favorite places to visit in Virginia City.
Stopped here on our walk about in Virginia city----the owner "Bill "was not only friendly but very helpful in our quest for classic auto memorabilia. He is a great example of the friendliness of America.
We went to the Piper's Opera House Corner Bar on the recommendation that they had the best bloody marys in Virginia City. They were correct. My friends and I have never tasted a better bloody mary. Watching them make them, we figured it was going to be expensive. When we were told they were $5 each, we were pleasantly surprised. After we tasted them we couldn't believe you could get some a great tasting bloody mary for so little money. We kept seeing signs all over Virginia City at the bars claiming to have the best bloody marys. Just to be scientific we had several other bloody marys at other saloons and bars. By far, the Corner Bar had the best. From this point, all bloody marys will be judge and compared to The Corner Bar.I'm starting to schedule my next visit to Virgina City, just to have a Bloody Mary at the Corner Bar!I would recommend this bar to all of my family and friends, especially the ones who like to drink, even more so if they love delicious bloody marys!
