My personal favorite golf course in Carson City, and the surrounding area. Reasonably priced, excellent customer service and a really nice course, all around.
I am used to golf courses in the Southeast and they are vastly different. This course had very little in common with the usual courses I play. It was interesting but I am not a fan of the large amount of natural sand & bushes here. It's just what you get used to I guess. There were not many golfers so we played fairly fast - about 3-1/2 hours for 18 holes. The greens were not in very good shape. A pet peeve of mine is with golfers not fixing their ball marks on the greens. These greens had way too many unfixed ball marks. This was also my first time playing at this altitude. the ball does travel farther at 4500-5000 ft. I rented a set of clubs and they were in fairly good condition. The club rental fee was $25.
The greens were very difficult. The first 9 holes (Red coruse) had recently punched grees and cups that had not been re-cut for seveal days. There were areas where there were mud holes that you might expect right after a heavy rai. It hasn't rained much up here for a long stretch. The greens had dry brown spots everywhere. Rough areas were overgrown. Many times the area adjacent to the fairways had uncut grass 3 or 4 inches high. Very poorly maincured course. The staff was friendly and we played 18 holes in just over 3 hours, but that was due in most part due to not many players. If visiting, my advice is pay a little more and play elsewhere.
We love going there for brunch. The food is always good and the views are wonderful! We also have gone in large groups and the service has always been great!!
Our initial impression was just another course trying to squeeze on as many people without regard to the overall experience. While the weather itself offered it's own challenges the course itself was interesting and the greens were in great shape. This is a 27 hole course so the pace of play was very nice. Some waiting but overall the flow was smooth and constant. Which as any golfer who plays over 150 times a year that is a gift.
If you look carefully at the reviews that were negative regarding Empire Ranch, those that hated it were in Spring of 2012. This course has a heck of a time with winter, and recovers quite well in late June, July, and August--and I assume through October or November. I play the course almost every year in August, and have never found "bad" conditions.Empire Ranch Golf Course has 27 holes, and for a small fee you get to play 18 of them. Yesterday, I played White-Blue (Sierra and River) courses. My fee, for frankly a delightful time playing, was...$22. That included cart, and was after 2:15 on a weekday afternoon. On the other hand, I only saw two groups ahead of me--one of whom waved me through and the other of which was on my 18th hole. The greens were in excellent shape, were "true", readable and well mowed. The fairways were in reasonable shape. Again, my perennial complaint, the traps (I was in one) are primarily hard backed grainy sand. That actually worked to my advantage on my six iron shot to a green--there was no large lip on the trap.If you are looking for a "tricky" course, or one with a lot of water, or one where the fairways are really narrow, this is not your spot. It is not a sophisticated golf course. But it's a heck of a lot of fun, and you will find great value for your golfing dollar. The service is minimal, by the way--no cart carrying drinks or water (there is a restaurant and a bar where you can purchase food or drink before or after your round); no GPS (bring your iPhone); no coolers filled with ice; no hot towels at the end of your round. But it's a good honest experience, with a friendly counter man, good parking, good carts, and a good course.I like this place. But I believe that the shape of the course probably depends on when you play.By the way, I finished the round in about 3:30. The pace of play is unhindered.
We live in the area and golf at the Empire course about a dozen times a year or more. The course offers the best of everything Carson City has to offer. Visitors must remember we are in the desert and it is difficult to have lush greens even when watering constantly. Overall, we enjoy the water features and layout of the greens. The price is very reasonable.
I have nothing to say that is positive about this place. I was invited to play this course as part of a three-day tournament sponsored by Gold Dust West Casino (GDW) in Carson City. Our tournament at Empire started at 8:00 am on the third day. This place was almost completely void of long-term maintenance. The layout exhibited significant weed infestation probably from poor uneven watering practices throughout. The fairways were a mix of barren soil, dry turf and plowed soil areas. The greens were fungus ridden, bumpy and grainy with barren patches. A staff person decided to start mowing the greens at around 9:30 am. So we got the added benefit of crappy unmowed greens to start followed by crappy mowed greens to finish. I was really angry that the GDW coordinator kept this crappy black hole a secret from us.
What a disappointing course. Most fairways are hardpan with little to no grass. The greens were awful. More dirt and weeds than grass. This course should be ashamed to promote itself as anything other than a driving range with flags.
conditions were terrible and staff was rude and not very helpful.
My wife and I played this course in August and were surprised at how challenging it is! The course is interesting and has a lot of forced carries from all 5 sets of tee boxes as well as hidden landing areas. To really enjoy this course they need to have a GPS on the cart or a yardage book. If you have a SkyCaddie, bring it!
we had a great time at the course , the amanagement was excellent, the course was in great shape last may, hope to return this may and play again.
