We had looked up museums on line. The Durham kicked up and it was our second one for the day. It was a good and interesting look at our past in rail transportation. The history of the building is one thing that drew us to it. The other thing was the other couple we were with and both passed through the station as children (50+ years ago). The entrance to the museum leads to the grand hall of the station. the lady at the entrance was very helpful and the cost is very reasonable for what you get to see. The train cars on the lower level were preserved to the exact time period. They had a club car and a sleeper that we looked at, outstanding. The highlight of this visit was the exhibit of Katharine Hepburn's costumes. they had over 50+ costumes from her life time. It followed from the beginning of her career to her last tv movie. There were three costumes I had not known about. But, in reality there were only two, the third was a Broadway play. They also had costumes fro the local theatre group that were just as good (and in some cases better) than the ones for Ms Hepburn.Great place to take children and learn some of the history of Nebraska.
This place is an architecture heaven! So beautiful! Makes you wish you had been here when it was a full time depot. Do not miss this gorgeous place! And have a root beer float at the soda counter-they're to die for!
This museum is preserved as a classic railroad station of the 1930s-40s. It seemed like period movies needing an old train station were filmed here.In the basement are several old trains preserved to look through. Definite emphasis on Union Pacific since they are a corporate fixture here in Omaha.Everything to see is really indoors, so it is good to visit in unpleasant weather.
My out to town friend and I went to the Durham Museum to basically see the Katherine Hepburn collection of costumes. That was only a small part of the interesting things in the Museum. The building dates from 1929 and is an excellent example of Art Deco. It served as the Union Pacific train depot until the late 1970's. Life sized statues are located through out the lobby/waiting room, which start up an audio conversation when you approach which is consistent with the times and their reason for taking the train. The depot is completely renovated to be true to the years when train travel was strong. There is a fully stocked soda fountain with an expended menu to include lunch items. This is a museum for everyone, not just train buffs.
The Durham Museum is in the renovated Omaha train station. The museum has special exhibits in addition to the standard exhibits. Check out the Union Pacific train exhibit and interactive activities with your kids. The history of Omaha exhibit is good for visitors and everyone loves the soda fountain.
This is a first class zoo for any city, let alone a mid sized city like Omaha! So worth a visit with kids or just adults can enjoy seeing the animals and the park like setting. Don't miss the Imax and the safari lift ride.
My kids and grandkids loved the exhibits at the Durham, something for everyone. We had lunch at the diner which is reasonably priced. A must see when in Omaha.
when my wife and i stayed at harrah's casino in council bluffs, we took a trip across the missouri river to the durham museum in omaha nebraska. we had been there a couple of times before, but this time was right after the new year started. the christmas tree was still up and gigantic. they have so many exhibits to look at and interactive things to do, kids will like it as much as the adults do. a great history of omaha and the surrounding area's is told thru pictures and actual displays of the tools of the trades that existed at the time. a steam engine, with the coal tender are in the lower level, along with two passenger car that you can walk thru.we spent around 3 hours there and still did not get to all the exhibits that a offered. highly recommend a trip to the museum for the day.
Its a nice museum, but its sort of random. I think its a great place for kids (the science discovery room is fun) but its light on actual history and context for those who want more than entertainment.
It has a great collection of local memorabilia and regularly offers temporary exhibits. Some of the temporary exhibits have other activities associated... lectures, receptions etc. These are all presented in the incredible art-deco railroad terminal that was nearly lost to redevelopment. We go for the "big Xmas tree" at the holidays and for many other offerings. A favorite was "rock & roll photography". Currently showing costumes of Katherine Hepburn, well worth seeing for anyone who enjoys old movies.
This is a very well kept and interesting museum. It can be navigated quickly or you can take your time and browse. I think that the walk through a UP passenger train from a time before air travel was very interesting. Being able to see the dining car and the overall luxury of the experience was unexpected for me. There is also a fun period specific soda fountain where you can end your experience in style. This attraction is fun for young and old alike.
Well done museum. Probably would only go there once but there is a display that changes. Very educational but a little high on price at 9 a person with no military discount.
Really liked the museum and the way it was laid out. Really enjoyed learning more about the history of Omaha. The building is very beautiful definitely worth a visit.
Very nicely done displays of Omaha and a lot of fun visual things to see for all ages. Well organized and very clean and attractive.
Had never been to the museum and enjoyed not only the exhibit I came to see but also the other permanent exhibits. I liked that they have a soda fountain with snacks and sandwiches. There is a lot of walking required, which meant I got my exercise. We spend hours looking around, having lunch and enjoying the museum. Will definitely go back. Beautiful art deco architecture. Wonderful!
