We enjoyed our visit to the Nebraska History Museum. Coming from out-of-state, it was a great way to learn about the history of Nebraska. There were three floors of exhibits and a very nice gift shop.

When we got there the cowboy museum had already been closed and they started to take it apart. The history of the plains indians was very fascinating but we ran out of time to investigate about the settlers that came to the area. I think I was told it will be closed in two months and it might be 2016 before the re-open. We enjoyed very much what we did get to see and the lady at the front desk directed us to go through the state capitol building...no time.

A decent collection of cowboy and Indian artifacts, but somewhat disappointing on other areas of history.

Dad (81 yrs old) really enjoyed the current exhibit on Cowboys at the History Museum in Lincoln, NE. The first floor includes old movie posters from old cowboy movies and buttons you can push to hear different cowboy songs and ballads and the info on their background. The Cowboy exhibit upstairs allows you to learn more about cowboys and ranching in the early Nebraska days and leads all the way up to present day. A bunkhouse, branding symbols, early saddles, chaps, clothing are also on display. The native American exhibit is also interesting, displaying different clothing and arrowheads and utensils from the past from the different tribes. We didn't have enough time to explore all of the displays as we had to get on the road....but what we saw and read was worth the visit.

Great collection from pre-Columbian through early 20th Century. I have been many times, but this time I took my Best Friend so she could understand the history of my home state.

I took our grandchildren (ages 9 & 6) to the history museum. We had such a good time! There is no admission cost and there is so much to see, learn and reminisce about. There is a 'hands on' area in which they could dress up, play in a teepee, play educational games, etc.....they loved it! I highly recommend adding this to your 'list of things' to see in Lincoln! Thank you Nebraska History Museum for helping to make wonderful memories with my grandchildren!

This museum covers the history of the Nebraska area. The Native Americans, from up to 12,000 years ago, are covered. I also learned about the settlers from Europe, and how Nebraska became a state. The temporary exhibit is about Nebraska cowboys and ranching. I enjoyed this museum.

This is one of the best state history museums we have visited!! Added bonus: admission is FREE! This museum has a fascinating collection of Native American artifacts from many different tribes. I also liked the quilt case housing a dozen quilts identified by pattern. There are also Interesting replicas of an earth lodge and a sod house.

I enjoyed this museum, it's old fashioned and could probably do with an update, but it means well. There was a display on Nebraska's Own Terri Lee dolls. I had never heard of this one, but the display was extensive and well curated. The permanent exhibits are well worth the time.

The charge is FREE, goodwill donations but no pressure to, and staff very helpful. The museum is small but that was nice because I did not have all day, I was wasting time so I had an hour. It could have spent all day but that is if I read every display. I did enjoy the visit and will go back again when I have more time. Great for children too, if I was a kid I would have loved it but I am a bit of a little kids yet. :-)

I liked this museum, it is very simply laid out, and fun to see the different eras of history. It is a great place for the upper elementary and middle schoolers to see what life was like. Lots of info and FREE!

I see the reviews here are kind of mixed, but I really liked this museum. (I wasn't traveling with children though) For starters it is free and is a nice walk from the state capitol building - a must see in Lincoln. It has three floors but I spent all of my time on the second floor. Here the history is laid out from the ancient times, with special attention paid to the Native tribes, Nebraska's admission as a state, and early statehood. I really appreciated the extra information given on the Native tribes. Did you know that several of the fierce Southwestern tribes - the Apaches and Comanches - were originally from Nebraska? Strife with other tribes forced them out before the European Americans started settling in the area. I've never seen information before on issues and conflicts between native tribes prior to contact with European Americans, so it was refreshing to learn about this - that native history is more than simply, 'uh, they was here when we showed up.' In the section on early statehood there were several rooms which you could look into (but not walk in) which tried to replicate traditional Nebraska places, such as a sod house and an old soda-pop fountain. I liken them to diaromas, and they were a nice touch.I understand what one of the other reviewers was saying about how the place felt a bit like a cardboard maze, with partition walls keeping you on a chronological path lined with anecdotes and artifacts. Maybe it wasn't the most elegant presentation, but I didn't mind. Nebraskans seem pretty practical, and this museum reflected that. I really enjoyed this place, I recommend it.
