Macchia wines was recommended to us for their Zinfandel. but we found that they also have a number of other fine wines. Their relatively new winery is a wonderful stop on any wine tour with friendly and informative staff coupled with great wines.
Macchia specializes in Zinfandel and has upwards of 8 zins (among other wines) to taste. Jason our host was very friendly and knowledgeable. Like most Lodi-area wineries, Macchia is dog friendly (most Napa/Sonoma are not) and has that family run hospitality and feel. Macchia's tasting room is located in a lovely 1912 farm house. But back to the wine, the best of all was the 2012 Grand Per Zin - produced from 125 year old vines. To purchase this fantastic wine you must belong to the wine club. However there are plenty of good wines to choose from and a zin sure to fit your palate. Don't miss Macchia on your next trip to Lodi wine country.
Tim has crafted some of the best wines in the Lodi Appellation (my favorite is the Late Harvest Zin and Port), and Lani has created an atmosphere that is welcoming and fun! Their fall and spring release parties are the best, with their wine and food tasting .. food vendors .. lots of merchants for shopping (jewelry, shoes, purses, wine trinkets, you name it) .. music .. and dancing! If you are in the Lodi area, this winery is a must-visit!
Like many Lodi wineries, this is a family run business that makes you feel like your part of the family when your there. The tasting room can get busy on weekends, so if you wish to spend some time hanging out, weekdays are ideal. Great wines from Zins to Syrahs to Barberas...it's all good.
So typical of Yelp are the mixed reviews. My wife and I visited yesterday in the middle of a heat wave that kept the crowds to a minimum. Yay for us! The last tasting (since we save the best for last) was Macchia. Hands down, in my humble opinion, the best Zinfandels around Lodi. Bought a couple to drink now, and a bottle of 2011 Serious that I paid $50.00 (a lot for me) that I will lay down for a few years. One of the major complaints that I see on this site is the tasting room experience. I have to compliment the LOVELY Vanessa and her cohort, the LIVELY Jason (tasting room mgr.) on their welcoming attitude, knowledge of their wines, and attention paid to the customers. They really made the tasting experience a fun one. I do understand how the people behind the tasting bar can make or break your tasting experience, but this was certainly a good one.
Terry is a knowledgeable host (middle name Alan) who represents the venue well. We bought several good bottles because Terry is so engaging and takes his time. The setting is a pleasant, well-kept farm house that has reasonably-priced gifts to compliment the range of good wines. It was the start of our day and we never found anyone superior to Terry in a long, good day of tasting.
Macchia Winery is a great winery to learn about Zinfandel wines from the Lodi wine district (they have at least ten really good offering and a wide price range). It’s amazing the difference in each vineyard. I first visited this winery to check out their Sangiovese and Barbera wines that are grown in the famous Barbera vineyards of Amador County. I had bought a bottle of one of their Sangiovese at the Lodi Wine Center and fell in love with its rich deep smooth flavor. Like many of the famous, smaller wineries in Northern California, the staff is very friendly and knowledgeable about the wines and vineyards. Located in an old rural farmhouse surrounded by vineyards, the Winery offers a pleasant and inviting atmosphere with tons of shade trees. We were getting ready to leave and I had picked out a couple different Barbera, a couple Sangiovese, and a Lodi Petite Sirah when my partner looked at me with sad eyes (like I was taking away a ball from a puppy) and said “aren’t we going to get a bottle of the Zinfandel I liked so much?” We did leave with a full six pack carrying bag.
