What a lovely place for a walk. Especially when you have a sweeping view of SF Bay and of San Francisco. Winding flat walkways will take you from one end of the park to the other. What a pleasant break from all the hustle and bustle of the city.
This was a wonderful place to visit! The visitor's center has lots of displays & the ranger is wonderful answering your questions. Who knew crabs could be so tiny?! Walking around outside you can take a self guided tour looking at points of interest from a free map you can get in the center. Lots of families & joggers all along the waters edge, so it feels very safe walking on the paths.
Beautiful park with bike/walk path along water. Museum was small but packed with interesting displays and a few aquariums to look at. Just as the boys (9&10) got bored the ranger program about owls started. This was followed by a hands on activity where each kid got to disect their own owl pellet. This kept the boys interest for a long while. Website not clear about fees. Museum free, parking $5, but kiosk was boarded up. Ranger said all free today. Plan to come back with whole family and make a day of it. Bike trail is several miles long next to beach.
This is a small site for outdoor fun! It has a educational center for viewing of the out door and sea life. There are mentors to assist, guide and answer your questions. You can walk along the beach looking for some form of sea life. They also offer classes and tours. You need to check their schedule for what is of interest to you. There are picnic tables and grills available if you plan a family outing. If you walk away from the site, some out door water sports activities are available at a cost. Check it out!!
What a lovely place to bring the kids. The visitor center is filled with interesting exhibits and information on regional critters and plants. The beach is nearby and so is a very nice walking trail. I'd love to return to spend more time exploring what this little park has to offer.
Great place to bring children. Small museum, with interactive facilities, history, air conditioning, and bathrooms. Summer schedule of events listed to participate in. Nice.
I took my grandson, age 9, because we needed a quick outing. The museum/nature center was fine...aquarium was small but nice. There were displays of whale bones etc. which interested him...and a small gift shop. The grassy area was huge, a nice area for a picnic. The beach is narrow at high tide, but doable...long beach, so people can spread out and not be in your face on a non crowded day.Older children would not find much to do, but it would be perfect and very safe for families with young kids.
Excellent place for a picnic, exploring the seashore, bird watching, hiking, jogging, dog walking, great for families and everyone. They have free Concerts at the Cove in Jun, Jul and Aug, bring a sweater, it gets cold when the sun goes down and can be windy and foggy. Nice long seashore, huge grassy area, and picnic tables in shaded areas. Also visit the Crab Cove Visitor Center.
Our four year old enjoyed the light wave action at the rocky beach... The museum/nature center was just his speed and the park was great for a picnic... The walkway was nice as well right beside the beach. More of a great neighborhood park than a real destination, but clean, quiet and relaxing.
One of the few Bay Area places where you can lat kids take their shoes off to run in the sand and that has tide pools to explore. Foster Freeze soft serve cones around the corner after. Nice place for families to go.
This is a photo of Crown Beach, not Crab Cove; Crab Cove is just out of sight to the right. Both beaches are nice to walk on, especially in winter, but suffer occasionally from litter and pollution -- I have seen a number of fully-loaded diapers in the waterline -- so check the posted pollution levels before entering the water.I am not a visitor -- I live here, and before arthritis struck would walk the beach twice a week. I find the litter after a summer weekend very sad and rather disgusting.
liked the view of the bay, the lengh of the beach (2.5 miles long). But there was a warning about a bacteria that causes a swimmer's itch (which is benign, but annoying).
Living in the Bay Area does not include a lot of beach time. By the time the summer gets going the coastal beaches are unpredictable for cold fog, wind and general non-warm temperatures for the beach. But if you know about this jem in Alameda, the kids will thank you for sure! Crab Cove and Crowne beach are the perfect beach for East Bay families with small children. There is parking nearby, you can roll your stroller on a paved path to choose your beach spot then walk steps away to the waters edge. Our last visit, the weather in Walnut Creek was forecast to be 100+F, but the weather in Alameda (only 30 minutes away) was a lovely 85F. My oldest daughter, 5, found a friend and wandered the beach looking for small crabs. We played in the water, built sandcastles, and met another family there. Lots of fun. My kids love this beach. There is a small science room there with aquariums etc, but we have yet to go in there. There is a Fosters Freeze within walking distance for treats, and a McDonalds close by as well. Also, because it is in the bay water, please check their website for water quality levels. They check almost daily and give green, yellow, and red ratings on the water quality. My kids have never had a reaction and I make sure I check before I go.
Our family LOVES the ocean & all it's critters, however this place bored us to tears!!! The shoreline was NOTHING & the visitor's center was pretty sad. We were disappointed.
