Beautiful park!! Huge trees. Lots of people there - many children and families. I remember there were walking trails throughout the park. There were great playgrounds for all ages there.
This park has just about something for everyone. The more tamed west end begins in the Chico city area. There is summer swimming (a pool created by using the crystal clear waters of Chico creek. Picnic areas, summer movies, and an area for plays (theatrical type). There are softball diamonds in several different locations. There is a very cool children's playground (Caper acres). There are miles of trails for horse back riding (and stables near by). The upper park area has a golf course, an observatory, fishing lake, and then you begin the really neat part of the park. There are miles of hiking, running, biking, horseback riding, trails that follow the wilder eastern part of the park, (upper park). The park also includes a disk golf course. Wow I could go on and on. Fly fishing is possible if you get permission in advance, some very lightly fished creek that is in the foothills. You get the idea. Parts are mowed and neatly kept, and parts are wild. Summer can be warm and dry in the upper park area, with the possibility of rattlesnakes, and poison oak. The more heavily visited areas (picnic, play grounds, ball fields etc are snake free. In reality this is a year round area to visit.
Have had the opportunity when visiting Chico to hike Upper Bidwell a couple times. Typically go to the parking area near the Gun Club and Observatory, and then hike up Monkey Face and then back into the park to the west. Then nice to work your way down to the river and then follow that trail back to the parking area. It's a tremendous park, huge in size, with lots of options for hiking, walking your dog(s), photography etc..... In the Upper Bidwell they have one side of the park for Offleash dogs and the other for on lead dog walking. Even when busy, the park is so large that I have found were still off by ourselves taking in the sites. This is a great park to explore.Lower Bidwell also looks great for a nice walk, although I've not done that. We always drive up to Upper Bidwell and then go from there. If your in the Chico area and enjoy hiking, don't miss this opportunity.Enjoy
Great location for a leisure walk in the lower park near downtown or a more intense hike in the upper park.
One of the largest municipal parks in California, over 3500 acres of natural beauty ! Great place to walk and bike, as the road is closed to traffic most of the day.Trees, trees, trees. Lower Park has a pool created by the creek running through a cement channel, the water is always moving, untreated, refreshing. Tons of picnic areas, many suitable for groups but the single table sites right by the creek offer rare peace and quiet. Baseball diamond, children's playground, equestrian trails, performance area (Shakespeare in the Park - YAY!) Upper Park is wild and natural, though some recreational development. This is a very special place.
Walking distance to downtown - great for bike riding, dog walking, hiking. Very unique - large, creek runs through it. The downer is that the highway also runs through it.
The Bidwell Park is beautiful and I believe one of the top (size) urban parks in the country. It starts in the center of town and ends in the foothills. A gift from Annie Bidwell that keeps on giving. The original Robin Hood was filled here due to the beauty and magical quality I am sure. Weather you are walking your dog, getting in your daily run or horseback riding, you are sure to enjoy the beauty of our park.
It's a great place for just walking in the park. Bring your Bikes with you Enjoy this beautiful Park. Wonderful place to take your Pet for a walk or run.
Chico is one of the most beautiful towns to visit. The downtown area is quaint and homey. The one Mile Swimming area is unique in that they concreted a large section of the creek running through Chico, and made it like a swimming pool. However, the creek continues to run through the area Fall until Spring then they lift blockades to make it a regular swimming pool. It is surrounded by lawn and trees. The area right next to the creek is paved and looks just like a regular pool, but very large and wide. Sorry, I don't have a picture of it available right now. You can drive through this area in your car. It goes along the creek, but it is like driving through a far off forest. Upper Bidwell Park is a great place to walk your dog. You can either take the trail up the mountain, or along the dirt road to Bear Hole. There is, also, a trail that goes right along the creek. All this is in the middle of the town of Chico, but when your in the park you feel like your in the middle of the forest. If you like to, hike, walk or ride a bike this is definitely the place to see when your in the area.
For walking, hiking, or biking, this is the best place in Chico. Bidwell Park is one of the largest city parks in the nation. Pretty impressive for such a small town. We can thank Annie Bidwell for that. And if you would like more info about the Bidwell's , I recommend going to Bidwell Mansion on the Esplanade.
bidwell park is the largest city park in the state. you can go hiking or biking, swimming in the creek or in the pool. there is so much to do. great for family parties or just hanging out with friends.
Just love this place Beautiful park Great place for your family outing or to ride a bike thru park. Upper Park is great for swimming and hiking too
Bidwell park defines Chico. It represents everything that's wonderful about this town. Stunning scenery that varies from woods, to creeks to wide open vistas of the mountains in the distance. Lower Bidwell includes biking/hiking trails, picnic areas along the creek and the area known as One Mile which includes a fantastic swimming area in the summer months. Upper Bidwell is more wild with great mountain biking opportunities and rugged hiking trails that wind back into the canyon. Nestled between upper and lower park is 5 Mile, where my kids love to swim in the creek and catch pollywogs. It's the perfect outdoor adventure close to home!
We have grand kids and a daughter who live in Chico and we always visit this park for our morning power walks. There's lots of ball fields, a municipal pool fed from the river, playgrounds for the children, picnic areas and lots of open shaded space to relax. Highly recommended.
Lots of biking and hiking trails, picnic and swimming spots throughout the upper and lower park. Kite flying, golf, horseback riding, frisbee golf, dog walking, fishing, shooting range and observatory for star gazing, lots of photo opportunities!
