If you're a bird lover you'll enjoy stopping by Free Flight. One can visit, pet, and feed a myriad of gorgeous birds. What more could you ask for for a mere 5 dollars? Bring your camera, as some of the birds will actually pose for you. :D
We've been here several times, and bring out of town family too! the kids love it and adults too! The birds will eat from your hand, chill on your arm or shoulder, talk to you! It's great! Very affordable also!
I was looking for something inexpensive, yet special for our youngest grandson in the San Diego area when I stumbled (my fingers in the keyboard) across Free Flight in Del Mar, Ca. For $5.00 for adults and free for little one, it is one of the best bargains in the San Diego area.It was established by a veterinarian as an exotic bird sanctuary and boarding site where bird that were no longer wanted had a place to go so that the public interested in exotics could see them and possible adopt. There are also birds there who are boarding while their owners are out of town.We were able to handle birds, feed them and try to avoid getting bit by birds less friendly. Our grandson, about 1.5 years old, was fascinated by the birds and delighted when several talked to him. He was reluctant to touch but finally did scratch a macaw's head. He real delight was in what was in the koi pond. They have the largest koi that I have ever seen. It may be due to the feed pellet you can buy to feed them. He crouched next to the pond laughing as the fish schooled to within about six inches from his hand and as he fed them. The staff are all trained on the care of exotic bird and are fountains of information if you ask. They explained to us the these birds are very sensitive about how they are kept. Several birds had bare spots on their breast. The birds had pulled out the feathers do anxiety and other maladies. Unfortunately the feathers don't grow back. We were told that there was a bird that had pulled all of it's feathers. Parrots and macaws live many years. The oldest bird in the area lived to be over 110 years. If you are looking for an enjoyable tour and educational experience that costs very little, you should take this in. Especially if you want to something for your children or grand children.
This was certainly worth a look.Being able to touch, feed and interact with exotic birds was really cool. The staff at this place insured your experience to be a good one.If you love parrots and enjoy getting out by the beach this is the place for you. It's small but well maintained. For the price it's well worth the drive to Del Mar.For a small fee you can purchase food and feed the birds. You can take them out of the cage and hold them if you're brave enough.
Free Flight is a home for birds who no longer have homes. The initial speech from the owner scared us and we were afraid of getting bit, but once we were there awhile and saw others handling the birds, it made us more comfortable. We bought food to feed the birds. It was fun to have them talk to you and there was one that danced and copied my daughter bouncing and opening up her wings (arms). This would not be a place for small children. My daughter is 12. Anyone under 10 would need close supervision.Check Groupon for a buy one get one free.
These guys really care about the animals. They are associated with the vet next door that specializes in birds. It's teeny tiny, but if you are a bird lover, or have a small child... it is worth spending an hour here. The birds on display look happy and well cared for.You can tell they do this not to make money... but because they love birds.
Lots of beautiful birds up close and PERSONAL. Some will sit on your arm. However, not appropriate for small children except under close control
A great place to go by yourself or bring the family. Get in touch with nature and the various multicolored parrots. Here is a rare opportunity to actually hold a parrot. Learn about avian behavior and feeding. This is a MUST SEE attraction. Getting one of your kids to hold a Real live parrot and take a photo. Admission is very reasonably priced. $5.00 for adults, $2.00 for the kids. Now I also volunteer for a parrot rescue on the east coast. The only negative point I saw was the parrots don't have any toys in the cages or perches. Nor is there any food or water cups, and the birds rely upon some good soul to feed them as they pass by. All pet animals need food, water, and some toys. Nonetheless, the birds do seem very well adjusted, healthy, and most are very friendly. Please visit, donate, and become friends with a parrot. It is an opportunity you will cherish forever. I gave parents the opportunity of a life time to take a photo of a parrot on their child's arm.I also spent some time teaching, guiding, and helping other visitors, but then again, I enjoy working with the birds.
Locals and tourists alike will enjoy a visit to Free Flight exotic bird sanctuary. Admission for adults is only $5, and you can stay as long as your bird-loving heart desires. Children I think are 2 or 3 bucks. You can purchase a cup of food for .50c and have some of the most beautiful birds on the planet eating from your hands. The staff is knowledgeable, and eager to answer any questions you have. I highly recommend this hidden gem. Please support the FreeFlight bird sanctuary with a visit, or if it's been a while since you were there!
The place was small but the person that showed us around was great! My son Ben couldn't seem to put Miss Kitty down! She loved him and kinda ripped his shirt apart it was a cheap shirt so no worries, she was a white bird with a great personality! We got to feed the birds and the fish if you are in Del Mar a great place to go!
This is a small area with exotic birds and a fish pond. The people who work here are very friendly and the birds are amazing. The cost of $5 for adults and $2 for kids was very reasonable. Some of the birds talk, others are just filled with personality. It is a place to linger and just enjoy the birds. If you are interested, the staff will let you hold the birds. We had such a nice time and fell in love with the golden conyor baby. I would recommend this place. Glad to support such a wonderful place.
San Diego is full of activities that can quickly add up. We had a few hours to spend focused on our girls' entertainment and I happened upon this little place while searching around online. We had a fantastic time, a memorable experience, and felt good about the fact that we spent less than $20. They had more birds on perches than cages so we had lots of hands-on time. Our girls (7 & 9) were a little nervous but really enjoyed feeding the birds. Definitely a wonderful little place.
We had a great time at free flight! The staff was very nice and knew a lot about the bird!! I personally love one of there big blue bird!! The bird was so nice she even climbed up my arm. I would definitely would go back!
We visited our friends in Del Mar and had some time to kill so stopped by. It's an interesting place with some beautiful birds. It is relatively inexpensive ($5 adults, $2 kids) and you can get up close to and interact with a variety of tropical birds. It's a small area with about 20 birds. You can see everything in a matter of minutes. We paid $0.50 to feed the birds, which added some interest. We were probably there a total of 20 - 30 minutes.
This is a very small outdoor bird sanctuary where you can see dedicated volunteers interacting with the birds. the birds are on perches so you can get very close to them since they aren't in cages. You can buy some food to feed the birds and it's interesting to see how they choose which piece of fruit or vegetable they want and how they hold it while eating. Some of the volunteers are very knowledgable which makes the visit even more enjoyable.
