if you are considering taking a tour of the amador cty wineries don';t miss this one...yes competitors may others may have polished sipping rooms and staff in fancy costumes with a lot of extras..this one is tough to beat in terms of laid back , good customer service and good value wines..
Some of the likes: dog friendly; casual and friendly folks; great wines - reds: Barbera, Zinfadel, Red on Red; whites - Reisling and Viognier; sweet - Port! and you have to try their Vino de Mocca. Worth the visit just to enjoy the conversation and the relaxed company. Wet One parties are always fun and so are the movie nights.
One of the friendliest wineries to visit in Amador County, Drytown Cellars is easy to see--right on Hwy 49 heading south towards Drytown. Try the verdelho--a light dry white wine made from grapes originally from Portugal. And their Pinot Noir (yes, Pinot Noir in the foothills!) is quite nice. The prices are great, there's no tasting fee, and the folks are as nice as you could ask for.
Drytown is a laid back winery where you can just relax and enjoy some great wines. We had a great time talking with the employees. Everyone was great! They even took us on a tour. I would highly recommend this place.
When going to Amador County wine tasting, we always stay at the Imperial Hotel in Amador City. That makes Dry Town Cellars a must stop on our way to, or from, the town of Plymouth where most of the wineries are located. We like this winery for a couple of different reasons. For one, it is never packed meaning we get personalized attention when we are there. For two, half the time it is the owner/winemaker who is being the tasting bar since his house is 50 yards down the hill. For three, they are certified dog friendly (having at least four dogs of their own) which makes it a great place to taste while enjoying the antics of man's best friend. We never know what we will go home with when we taste here, this year it was a 375ml. port that we hadn't purchased before. Regardless of what they are pouring, the stories about the wine are great, the service excellent and we appreciate their being dog friendly.
One of my new favorite wineries in the area. Big bold affordable wines with enough variety that just about anybody could find something they like. They're red on red at $10 a bottle is an absolutely phenomenal value as an everyday drinker. Their lineup represents all the grape varietals that are grown in that area and there wine maker works wonders with them. These wines are not crafted for the faint of heart. Add this one to your list and make a point of visiting.
Good wines, great deals, super nice and knowledgeable people. I have made their red-on-red my everyday drinking wine.
Allen and Suzanne always produce great and drinkable wines and Allen's expertise is renown in the local wine circles.
