I have driven by this frame work of an old store from gold times. There isn't much to see and you can't get access, but it is Americana!
I live within 2 miles of this place and never stopped once. No one's done anything to restore this place its simply a wreck. Not much to see in terms of gold rush era architecture.. for that sort of thing go to Columbia State Park in Sonora
Thanks to folks in Amador County, this Gold-rush era stone store still is standing and it's conveniently located right along the Golden Chain Highway just a couple of miles south of Jackson!
This is a great gold-rush era building; but very dangerous to visit. The front of the building is located on the white-fog line of a very busy State highway. No place to park, except on the very edge of the highway. You cannot walk into or around the building...no public access. BE CAREFUL...
The gold country of California saw many mining towns arise, flourish, and then die as claims played out and people moved on. The Butte Store is all that remains of one town.Located about 2-3 miles south of Jackson (itself originally a gold mining town), the Butte Store sits right alongside Highway 49. There is a place to pull over to park so you can get out and look more closely at it. It is designated a California Historical Landmark, and is surrounded by a fence to protect it. The building was constructed in 1857 and was the general store and post office for the town. Also called simply "Ginocchio's" after the family that owned it, the store was in operation until the early 1900's. Only the walls remain today.
