The docents were very friendly, and explained things very well. The exhibits were fine, too.The museum is right across the street from a delightful little restaurant with a patio. If you have a dog, they will bring him/her a treat on the house.
We went on a weekend trip to Kernville. We were fortunate enough to stumble upon the museum in town. We were amazed at the amount of items in the museum, as well as the volunteer staff that were more than willing to provide information on items that we had no idea of their purpose. It was a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon in Kernville and we learned a lot about the history of the area.
This is the place that will answer that. From old mining tools to an interactive map of Kern River Valley to Native American artifacts, this place has just about everything. Be sure to check it out if you're in Kernville. Oh ya, and it's free to enter.
This is A small but extremely well maintained museum which is stock full of memorabilia of all kinds from prospecting to movie making. Hollywood it appears highly favoured the Kern Valey area as a location backdrop and there is plenty of history on show about it here. I visited with my Two year old son and he loved it, especially the prospectors cabin outside and the myriad of vehicles. We only had an hour but could have stayed much longer. Staff were extremely helpful.
We enjoyed learning about the local history and meeting some great people. The museum has many pictures reflecting the lives and times of the Kern River area. The people working there were eager to share their information with the visitors.
Our family of four stopped in to see what the Museum had to offer, and we were pleasantly surprised. We spent almost an hour there wandering through the museum. It is very nice in that you can actually pick up and touch/operate many of the items on display. Very hands on for the kids!
Very nice museum relative to the history of Kern Valley. Lots of photos and exhibits relative to the area. Kernville was a major filming area for western movies and they have a great movie room telling the history. Outdoor exhibits also. Nice way to spend a couple of hours.
This Museum is a hidden gem of Kernville. An often overlooked place to visit is one of the first places I suggest to guest at my Lodge. The Museum covers the entire history of the Kern River Valley and the old town of Kernville. And the gold rush. It is a must to see.
If you really want to know about the history and places around Lake Isabella and the surrounding area, you need to visit the Museum in Kernville. Everyone there is a volunteer, nobody gets paid, and the museum receives no government funds. It is supported by donations only, but it is chock full of actual items from the past. And the docents are very knowledgeable.
This is a great museum that describes the history of the Kern River valley. The volunteers are terrific and proudly enjoy explaining the area history. If you are in the Kern River valley stop in. I am not sure it is a place one would go out of their way to get to. Good fishing and hiking in the area.
We have visited the Kern Valley Museum a few times, and it is always interesting. We enjoyed seeing the way the early settlers lived - the outside collections were surprisingly large! The museum is located right by the Kernville Circle, easy to get to, never a parking problem.
The display of rocks and minerals was extensive and there were lots of interesting exibits. The helpers were enthusiastic and knowledgeable. It was in the middle of town, easy to park and good opening hours.
I have been visiting the Kern Valley for many years and this is a great place to stop in. It really captures the history and spirit of this very historic valley...Its not as small as it looks, stop in and check it out!
My husband and I were in town overnight on business and decided to stop by the Kern Valley Museum since it was near our motel. We were surprised to find that the museum is larger than it initially appears and contains many interesting collections both indoors and outside in the back. The friendly docents are knowledgeable on area history and eager to share information. We ended up spending a little over an hour looking through all the artifacts and information on display, as well as talking to the staff. The best part is that the museum is free! I highly recommend that you stop by.
This museum is terrific. It is completely run by volunteers and the docents we met ( Cindy, Gene, Mary) were friendly, informed and helpful. Museum itself is beautifully maintained. Will visit again.
